Oh LORD, Our God!
Sanctified and Holy is Your Most Hallowed Name.
How Excellent,
How Wonderful,
How Perfect You Are!
My Heart is Overwhelmed With Your Glory,

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

An apocryphal story about author Mary Shelley tells of a wager made with her "husband's" (read the Wiki article to see why I used air-quotes) social group. The group contained Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, and other Romantic Poets of the Era. These poets were on the fringes of "polite society", as they were advocates of political radicalism, free love, and occult spirituality. Yet, although they sometimes induced scandal, the group was immensely popular due to the beauty of their writing. They were somewhat like the Rock Stars and Celebrities of our own times, and were forgiven things that you or I could never get away with.

So, imagine these famous writers, sitting around with their brandy snifters and cigars, competing with one another as to who is the greatest. A proposal is made that they all independently write a "ghost story", (what we would now call a Gothic Novel or a Psychological Thriller) and then vote on who did it best.

Mary's entry was Frankenstein, one of my all-time favorite books.

It is not clear whether Mary "won" the contest, but I defy anyone to name the entries of Lord Byron or Percy Shelley. Maybe someday I will look it up myself, if I cared enough! LOL.

But "Frankenstein"! What a book! Though written 200 years ago, it permeates our culture. It has spawned Books, Movies, Mini-Series, Action Figures, Halloween Costumes, Cartoons, and a hysterically funny Mel Brooks movie. It's also a Classic Rock Instrumental by the Edgar Winter Group (allegedly named because the piece was produced by cobbling several unrelated tracks together, like Shelley's monster). We use it as a noun ("I've created a Frankenstein!"), a verb ("I just Frankensteined these parts together to make my deep-sea diving capsule") and many other uses.

Who knew that a teenage girl, living with her lover in a foreign country in the Early 19th Century, could come up with something that would change Western Culture.

Why did Mary Shelley touch a nerve like that?

The clue is in the alternate title: "The Modern Prometheus."

Prometheus.

Prometheus was the Titan in Greek Mythology who incurred the wrath of the gods by introducing FIRE to humans. The Introduction of Fire was the catalyst that brought about Civilization. Why this bothered the gods, I have no idea, as Civilization is usually considered a GOOD thing.

The story of Prometheus and the loss of innocence (ie: Now that you have fire, you gotta build a city, settle down, and get a REAL Job!), echoes the loss of innocence in the Garden of Eden. The Serpent went through several stages to tempt Eve

1. He Distorts the Word of God:

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1 NIV)

We read in the previous chapter that God only singled out two trees to avoid, not all of them.

2. He Calls God a Liar:

4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. (Gen. 3:4 NIV)

Well, yeah, you sure ARE going to die, just not immediately.

3. He Accuses God of Ulterior Motives:

5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5 NIV)

The Deceiver appeals to Eve's vanity. Who DOESN'T want to become like God?

This is the same type of Temptation that propels Dr. Victor Frankenstein (in the novel) to create his monster. He wants so much to be able to create life in the lab that it costs him his career, his home, his family, his bride, and his very life. The end of the book has him relentlessly chasing the monster through the desolate, lonely, freezing ice floes of the Arctic to destroy the evil thing his hubris has created.

God is the Only One who can create Life out of nothing. While it might be possible to "reanimate" dead tissue through some arcane method that consumes more energy than it creates, ONLY GOD can create something out of nothing. The Latin Term for that is "ex nihilo", and it is exclusive to God.

Even Dr. Frankenstein need "raw materials" to work with.

I will be away for the weekend with two of my sisters, so our next posting will be on Monday, June 24th. We will still be in the Gospel of John, but will be jumping back to Chapter 8 for our next Name.
