An unhinged man armed with a hammer targeted a Brooklyn church’s beloved statues of Mother Teresa and a Catholic pope, smashing their faces in, police said Tuesday.

Randy Maldonado-Avila is accused of bashing a statue of Pope John XXIII, who led the Catholic church from 1958 till his death in 1963, with a hammer, as well as lopping of one of its hands. He also allegedly smashed a statue of St. Teresa of Calcutta, denting her face.

Maldonado-Avila, 30, also used the hammer to smash the glass front doors of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church on Bay Ridge Parkway near 20th Ave. in Bensonhurst around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Lifelong parishioner Joanne Liggieri, 54, was in her apartment across the street from the church when her daughter alerted her someone was vandalizing the church.

“He started smashing all the statues and as I’m seeing this, I video tape it and at the same time I got 911 on the phone,” said Liggieri. “I gave his description, what he was wearing, what he had in his hand and what block he turned down.”

Maldonado-Avila muttered under his breath as he wielded the hammer, according to Liggieri.

“I don’t know what he was saying, but he sounded agitated,” she said. “He was mad.”

With Liggieri’s help, cops caught up with the man nearby the church.

“I did my Communion here. I got married here. All my kids got baptized here. All my kids did their sacraments here,” Liggieri said. “Just seeing this, I had to do something. I felt like it was my duty.”

In a post on Facebook, the church said they “thank God no one was physically injured.”

“We are saddened by the damage and the senseless violation of sacred statues and the broken glass of our church doors,” church officials posted.

I hope he didn’t leave tire tracks on a pride flag on his way there. Then he’d be in real trouble.

The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 was one more piece of bad legislation that has contributed to our current mess.

Was that the legislation that turned the loonies loose into the streets and thus staffed liberal talk show host roles into the future?

He’ll be let off with a slap on the wrist.

It’s not like he peeled out on a pride flag painted crosswalk. Now THAT could land you in some serious trouble.

satan demands action from his slaves. Just saying you are a follower of satan is not enough. He tells these slaves to physically attack Christianity when the opportunity comes around.

I really believe people like this need be shot on sight. This is a war on beliefs not a demonstration.

What type of hammer did he use? No one needs a hammer that can hit things rapidly.

BAN ASSAULT Hammers! /s

Maldonado-Avila, 30

Perhaps one of those beautiful immigrants that Jeb Bush told us they were.
