About a year into the pandemic of recent memory, I had a doctor's appointment that couldn't be postponed. I suited up, got on the Harley and rode the rather pleasant twenty miles to the doctor's office (that's a whole other story...why I have to drive TWENTY MILES to see the doctor, but I digress). I have a way of going there that avoids even secondary highways, through leafy neighborhoods and quiet roads. It's twenty miles either way, but who needs the stress of highway driving?

When I reached the doctor's office, I saw a big motorcycle in the parking lot. It was a Honda Gold Wing, but I'm not prejudiced. I have a sense of camaraderie with anyone who takes the road on two wheels. Under a tree nearby was the Office Nurse, having her lunch. On the picnic table next to her was her helmet and leather jacket.

"AHA! A WOMAN RIDER!"

I was delighted to approach a person of my own sex who rides, as there aren't many of us out there. I was totally ready to engage in some friendly Scooter Talk which could easily turn into ministry.

As I approached, she threw down her sandwich, grabbed a mask, and held up her palm at me.

"GET BACK! she shouted. "YOU'RE NOT WEARING A MASK!!!"

"Viruses are smaller than the weave on your mask," I retorted. Do you honestly think you are protected by that little piece of cloth?" It's like putting up a chain-link fence to keep out the mosquitoes."

At that, I turned and went into the office for my doctor's appointment, which would involve annual bloodwork. When I went into the room to have the Blood Draw, the Phlebotomist was the woman with whom I had the altercation out in the parking Lot. She still acted professionally, but she glared at me the whole time she was taking my blood!

Of course, at that point, we were both wearing masks, as per Massachusetts law during the pandemic.

For centuries, people thought that the Atom was the tiniest piece of indivisible matter in existence. Then, that assumption was burst asunder by the discovery of Nuclear Fission. The Atom could be broken up into smaller pieces, which, in turn, are made up of even tinier particles. In fact the behavior of these particles is so fascinating that there is a whole Branch of Science devoted to them called Quantum Mechanics. There is even a facility in Europe, which takes up acres and acres of land, whose sole purpose is to make even tinier particles out of these by smashing them together at outrageous speeds. It's called the Large Hadron Collider.

I am neither a Virologist, nor am I a Quantum Physicist, (I'm an Artist, Jim, not a Scientist!) but I know that Viruses and Subatomic particles DO exist, even if I have never seen one. We do, however, see the effects of these things. A virus can make you sick, and a split atom can destroy a city.

Even Neutrinos, while not visible even with a microscope, leave tracings that can be seen. We can't see Air, but would die without it.

While some things are too small to be seen, other things are too big. A mountain, a skyscraper, or even a 500-car train can't be seen in their entirety when you are up close. The view has to be condensed by distance in order to take it all in. It's like the old parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant

St. Paul says something similar when he says "we all see in part, like looking into a cloudy mirror"(1 Corinthians 13 my paraphrase). St. Paul also calls God "Invisible" in his Letter to Timothy.

In the days of Viruses, Subatomic Particles, and Hadron Colliders, it is no longer valid to say "Seeing Is Believing". There are some things that we will never see, and yet we believe.

Why should it be any different with God?
