Boise’s Cathedral Of The Rockies is one of the worst churches goat pens around. They’re a pro-LGBTQQIP2SAA, pro-choice United Methodist Church (ie, not a church at all) that we last wrote about after they sent out a church newsletter encouraging congregants to help abortion-minded women by paying for their abortions, abortion pills, and traveling expenses to cover the costs of their baby-killing in light of the overturning of Roe. v. Wade.
During a recent service, they put on a feminist remix of ‘Be Thou My Vision’ titled ‘God of the Women.’
Written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette in 1998, she says “This hymn was first published in The Presbyterian Outlook. The Episcopal women’s magazine titled Communiqué distributed the hymn widely and its popularity in the Episcopal Church is evident in that the hymn is included in Voices Found: Women in the Church’s Song, the supplement to the Episcopal Hymnal.”
Elaborating on her lyrics, Gillette further notes that “The third verse recalls the painful history for women of faith. “Left out of stories” refers to the way in which biblical writers often ignore women (for example, Matthew 14:21 tells that Jesus fed “five thousand men, not counting the women and children”).
God Of the Women
God of the women who answered your call,
Trusting your promises, giving their all,
Women like Sarah and Hannah and Ruth —
Give us their courage to live in your truth.
God of the women who walked Jesus’ Way,
Giving their resources, learning to pray,
Mary, Joanna, Susanna, and more —
May we give freely as they did before.
God of the women long put to the test,
Left out of stories, forgotten, oppressed,
Quietly asking: “Who smiled at my birth?” —
In Jesus’ dying you show us our worth.
God of the women who ran from the tomb,
Prayed with the others in that upper room,
Then felt your Spirit on Pentecost Day —
May we so gladly proclaim you today.
O God of Phoebe and ministers all,
May we be joyful in answering your call.
Give us the strength of your Spirit so near
That we may share in your ministry here.
Oh wait, they are already down there working as clinic escorts.
Now do you all get why I post these things?
I do. This church is a false heretical one.
Trashing one of the oldest Christian hymns from Ireland.
Just because they want to make trashy songs doesn’t mean they have to trash someone else’s.
“Written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette in 1998”
At least it mentions Jesus and mentions “birth”. My problem is the focus should be on Jesus and not men or women.
But this thing was written in 1998. Imagine if it were written today by some feminazi.
I hate when they mess with traditional hymns, but IIRC, this was an Irish tune long before the hymn lyrics were set to the tune. Many hymns have tunes identical to secular songs.
And these “woman” lyrics ... I don’t have a problem with them. If it says God is a woman, I missed that, and I apologize. But God is/was God to the women listed there, and they were amazing human beings.
So, I guess ... best me up...? I dunno.
If women have been left out of the story (the biblical narrative) how did the hymnwriter know about them to mention them in the hymn? I, a man, know about all of the women mentioned here. Liturgical churches commemorate the feast days of plenty of women saints. In the Orthodox Church, St. Mary of Egypt is commemorated on a Sunday during Lent. And the Myhrr Bearing women are commemorated on the second Sunday after Easter. The Gospel for Easter tells how the women went to the tomb and were the first to hear of Christ’s resurrection. They were center stage on the biggest event.

One of the most beautiful hymns ever written... nothing exclusionary about it, it can be sung by anyone. Very sad to cheapen it over what is essentially jealousy. Why is it the feminists never learned the “the meek shall inherit the Earth” and “the least shall be first,” etc.
One these churches is about a mile and half from where I’m sitting. In fact, one of the female “pastors” tried to buy our old house which is not far from there. It was a laughable offer, IIRC. (This was ten years ago.)
