DAY of the LORD
Prophecy Questions Blog ^ | June 1, 2005 | Charles Meek

Posted on 04/09/2024 5:58:19 PM PDT by grumpa

The phrase Day of the Lord (or variations of the phrase) is used in seventeen or so passages in the Old Testament (Isaiah 2:12; Isaiah 13:6-13; Isaiah 34:2-10; Jeremiah 46:10; Lamentations 2:22; Ezekiel 13:5; Ezekiel 30:2-4; Joel 1:15; Joel 2:1; Joel 2:11; Joel 2:31; Joel 3:14; Amos 5:18-20; Obadiah 1:15; Zephaniah 1:2 to 2:3; Zechariah 14:1; Malachi 4:5)—and in at least five passages in the New Testament (Acts 2:20; 1 Corinthians 5:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2; 2 Thessalonians 2:2; 2 Peter 3:10). It is also alluded to in other passages (Romans 13:12; Hebrews 10:25; Revelation 6:17; Revelation 16:14). The exact count of how many times “the day of the Lord” is found in Scripture may differ because we can include similar phrases such as “that day” or “day of his wrath.” The phrase is usually prophetic warnings about coming judgments by God on his enemies.

The term does not refer to the same time period. The Bible uses the term to mean any time that God brings judgment upon the wicked or disobedient, usually by sending an opposing army as the instrument of his judgment. But the precise application of the term in some passages is a point of disagreement among Christians. The disagreements arise because the text in some cases may not be specific as to who the recipient of God’s justice is, when the prophecy was penned, or because of the assumptions or presuppositions that different Christians bring to a given passage. And, as in other matters of prophecy, some people see multiple fulfillments of the same prophecy. Let’s consider a few of these Day of the Lord passages.

Amos 5:18-25 ― fulfilled in 722 BC when Assyria conquered the Northern Kingdom of Israel

Jeremiah 46:2, 10, 13 ―fulfilled when the Babylonian army defeated Egypt in 605 BC, bringing justice for King Josiah’s death at the hands of the Egyptians per 2 Chronicles 35:20-27. See also Ezekiel 30:2-4.

Zephaniah 1:2, 4, 7, 14-16 ― Zephaniah was a contemporary of Jeremiah, and like Jeremiah his focus was a prophetic warning to Judah about its coming destruction by the Babylonians in 586 BC. (“Everything on the face of the earth” is probably hyperbole commonly found in prophecy.)

Ezekiel 13:1-16 ― fulfilled when the Babylonian army conquered Jerusalem in 586 BC

Isaiah 34:1-10 ― fulfilled when the Babylonians destroyed Edom in 583 BC (“All nations” is probably either hyperbole or a reference to the nations around Judah who will be judged”)

Isaiah 13:1-22 ― fulfilled when the Medo-Persian army beat Babylon in 539 BC

Malachi 4:1-5 (ref. Matthew 3:7-12; 23:35-24:2) ― fulfilled when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem in AD 70

Joel 2:28-32 (Acts 2:14-21) ― fulfilled at Pentecost and then finally when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem in AD 70 [also note 1 Peter 4:7 where Peter declared that “the end” was at hand.]

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 ― fulfilled when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem in AD 70

2 Peter 3:10 ― This passage is perhaps the most controversial one. But a Greek word in this verse helps us see that it also had a first-century fulfillment. The word is STOICHEION, which is often translated as “elements” or mistranslated as “heavenly bodies.” The elements were to be “burned up” or “exposed” in various translations. Scripture interprets Scripture. STOICHEION is used five other times in the New Testament: Galatians 4:3, 9; Colossians 2:8-9, 20-22; and Hebrews 5:12-13. Without exception, in every case STOICHEION is about theological/covenantal things―not physical universe things. (Look them up.) So, what was about to be destroyed? Answer: the Old Covenant, which was “ready to vanish away” for good in AD 70 when Jesus came in judgment against apostate Old Covenant Israel and when the temple was destroyed (Hebrews 8:13).

For a fuller exegesis of 2 Peter 3, see this article: 2 Peter 3 and Planet Destruction"

It’s actually a reference to the final 1000 year millenial reign of Christ on Earth, BEGINNING with the 7 years of wrath which precedes it.

The 6 days of creation followed by God’s 7th day of rest is itself prophetic of God’s division of time periods of mankind’s history.

Day 1 = Adam
Day 2 = Noah
Day 3 = Moses
Day 4 = Dark Ages?
Day 5-6 = Church age
Day 7 Millenial reign.

I may not have those divisions labeled right, but you should get the general idea.

It therefore CANNOT be a reference to a previous period in Israel’s history.

The Five Biggest Errors of Dispensationalism

1. CHURCH AGE. Dispensationalists would have us believe that the church age is but a parenthesis in history. In other words, the church age constituted an “interruption” in the fulfilment of the kingdom promises to Israel. But, Christ was not a sidelight. That idea is an abomination and an affront to our Lord Jesus Christ. The kingdom of Christ―the New Covenant/Christian Age―is in effect now (Matthew 16:19; Colossians 1:13) and has NO END. There are dozens of passages which prove that, including: 2 Samuel 7:13; Isaiah 9:7; Ezekiel 37:26; Daniel 2:44; 4:3, 34; 7:14, 27; Luke 1:31-33; Hebrews 5:6; 2 Peter 1:11; Revelation 1:6; 5:13; 11:15. Furthermore, the New Covenant and the gospel are eternal (Hebrews 12:28; 13:20; Revelation 14:6) and has universal application (John 3:16; Romans 1:16; Galatians 3:28; Ephesians 1:21; Titus 2:11; 1 John 4:14; Revelation 5:9; 7:9).

2. DUAL COVENANT THEOLOGY. Dispensationalists think that Israel is distinct from the church―that Israel will re-emerge as pre-eminent among nations. They will again be God’s people in a unique sense. But, this conception was obliterated with the teachings of Paul that all distinctions between Jew and Gentile have been broken down by the gospel (Galatians 3:28). The New Testament declares that all of God’s covenant promises were fulfilled in Jesus (Luke 1:54-55, 69-75; 2 Corinthians 1:20), the ultimate offspring of Abraham (Matthew 1:1; Galatians 3:16). The promises to Israel were contingent on obedience (Deuteronomy 28), but she failed the test (Matthew 23:29-24:3) and had a finite end (Mathew 21:18-19; Romans 11:11-24; Hebrews 8:13; 10:8-10; etc.). The kingdom was taken from the Jews and given to another group, namely the church (Matthew 21:33-45)―melding a remnant of faithful Jews with believers in Christ (Romans 11:1-24; Galatians 3:28). The new Israel of God is no longer fleshly, natural Israel, but rather are those who have faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12-13; 8:31-47; Romans 2:28-29; 9:6-8; Galatians 3:6-9, 25-29; 6:14-16; 1 Peter 2:4-10; etc.). The modern state of Israel has nothing to do with biblical Israel.

3. MISUNDERSTANDING THE LAST DAYS/END TIMES. There are 19 specific mentions of the last days or end times in the New Testament. Without exception, the writers of the New Testament declared that THEY were living in the last days (Acts 2:14-21; 1 Corinthians 7:19-21; 10:11; Hebrews 1:1-2; 9:26; 1 Peter 1:20; 4:7; 1 John 2:18; etc.) Thus, the last days/end times marked the end of the old covenant order, not the end of time or the end of the Christian Age.

4. INSISTENCE ON ALWAYS READING THE BIBLE LITERALLY. Just some questions: Should we literally hate our mother and father so that we can be Jesus’ disciple (Luke 14:26)? If your eye causes you to sin, should you literally pluck it out (Mark 9:47)? Is it necessary to literally eat Christ’s body in order to have life (John 6:53)? Did the mountains and the hills really break into song and the trees clap their hands (Isaiah 55:12)? When God judged Babylon according to Isaiah’s prophecy, an event fulfilled in actual history in 539 BC, did the stars and sun literally stop giving their light (Isaiah 13:10) and the heavens literally tremble (Isaiah 13:13)? When God judged Edom did the sky literally roll up like a scroll (Isaiah 34:4)? Why do you insist on a literal earthly kingdom when Jesus said his kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36)? Is the New Jerusalem literally a future city 1400 miles square that will hover over the Middle East like a space ship? Geeze. Especially this literal millennial stuff, if it wasn’t being taught in Christian churches, it would be considered science fiction!

5. FUTURIZING DANIEL’S 70 WEEKS. Here are things that cannot be found in the 70 weeks of Daniel 9:24-27: the Antichrist, a covenant being made with the Jews by Antichrist (then broken), a gap of 2,000 years between the 69th and 70th weeks, a post AD 70 rebuilt temple. If these things are not found in Daniel 9, dispensationalism crumbles. Daniel 9:27 is clear that the prophecy ended with the “end to sacrifice and offering” and the Abomination of Desolation (which Jesus told his first-century followers they would witness per Matthew 24:15). These things happened in real time in AD 70 when the temple was destroyed (Matthew 24:2, 34).

“This generation” is literal ... but “coming on the clouds of heaven” is not, “every eye will see him” is not. Preterists are retroactive date-setters. There is no difference between Charles Meek and Harold Camping ... they are both date-setters ... Meek just sets his date at 70 AD.

The only prophecies fulfilled in 70 ad were the ones about the scribes and Pharisees getting judged and one stone left on another.

The rest of end time prophecy is in our future.

STOICHEION = elements, One word? Are you serious? What about "heaven" "great noise" "fervent heat" "earth" "burned up" etc. You are have to very desperate to relegate all this to the temple being destroyed.

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2 Peter 3:10-13)

Fulfilled? How about,

And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. (Zechariah 14:12)
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. (Revelation 18:21-23)

Seems to me that Jerusalem does not agree with your eisegesis.

"You, go into all the world and preach the good news!" ~ Jesus of Nazareth

Matthew 25

24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

You had *one* job.

Thomas Ice declared, “In order to be a dispensationalist, one has to hold to a literal approach to interpreting the Bible.”

Thomas Ice declared, “In order to be a dispensationalist, one has to hold to a literal approach to interpreting the Bible.”

I see nothing wrong with that statement.

The Bible is God's method of communicating with His creation. Communication requires clarity, not obfuscation.

While some things are obfuscated in Scripture (parables), most of it *is* literal. And I'm including Revelation in that comment. The only things that would not be literal, are when John sees things for which he has no comprehension, and tried to describe as best he could (modern technology?? Not sure, but remain open).

Somebody might want to be on the lookout for Elijah or a type of Elijah about 6 months before Christ returns to prepare His way for the next 1,000 years after Satan has had a Legion(6,000) of years to kill man, even men promised the Kingdom.

Satan hasn’t been locked away yet for 1,000 years.

What a day that will be..

...it’s Wednesday.

Tomorrow will be Thursday and the Word will still be the same.

...maybe I’ll rest on Friday, when that Word will still be the same =o)

.......

Today could be called His Day of the New Moon(New Month)

A day He separated from His 6 workdays and His Sabbath in the scriptures.

Tomorrow is then His 1st work day when He commemorates Let there be Light.

When His Day comes, there won’t be any more Woden’s days. Or Thor’s days..

Those days go away..

He has made today. And it is actually not one of His 6 work days or His Sabbath, yet still a day He commemorates something in Genesis and John.

And false God woden gets the honor, whether directly or indirectly.
Tomorrow, Thor gets the honor.

That’ll change when His Day comes..

Amazingly prophetic,though.

How silly! THE LORD made the days, not thor. All days are the Lord’’s.
Thor doesn’t have a day.

You made that stuff up.

You really shouldn’t be assigning what is God’s to imaginary idols. The SDA group would be very upset with you.

Well; just like the ANTI-Christ gets a LOT more attention than the Book indicates he should...

These are the only places that the word antichrist is mentioned in the Bible.

1 John 2:18
Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

1 John 2:22
Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist — denying the Father and the Son.

1 John 4:3
...but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist , which you have heard is coming and
even now is already in the world.

2 John 1:7
I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist
.

Merely looking at the instances that the word/phrase Last Days appears can be a bit misleading as well.

Plenty of Scripture indicate that mass destruction IS coming, will it be considered 'last days' when it occurs?

Not silly.

I didn’t make up woden or thor or name the days of the Babylonian week..

We inherited them.
One can simply test if Wednesday has any roots to being named after Woden or Odin. Same with Thursday and Thor. Do Friday too. Saturday as well. All 7 of the Babylonian days..

Or don’t.

Thankfully, the Creator has an alternative way to tell time.

And today isn’t Wednesday to Him.
The world is free to follow the Beast and Babylonian system.

Until it falls.
