Firefighters and police are combing through debris after the roof of a historic Connecticut church collapsed into the building.
The roof of the Engaging Heaven Church in New London completely caved in and destroyed the building at 1.30pm today.
The Church confirmed on its Facebook page that while one person was inside the building at the time, no one was injured.
According to Mayor Michael Passero, the remaining building will also need to be demolished.
Officials are still trying to determine the cause of the collapse.
At a press conference, Passero said crews are expected to be at the scene all night.
State and local building inspectors will continue to examine the debris and the remaining structure before deciding on what the next step.
Passero said the church was 'a cherished historic structure' and that the disaster will leave a 'gaping hole in our downtown'.
The mayor also confirmed that the building next to the scene, which houses Connecticut College students was evacuated and the students were relocated to a nearby hotel for the weekend.
But the disaster has not damaged community spirit.

“Mayor Michael Passero”
…lib? Just curious
I hope it is not God making his opinion known of Connecticut these days…
You know that thought did cross my mind while I looked at images of that church.
...and noticed the rainbow fish on the fence.
Looking at the photos of this Connecticut Church, the answer is quite clear why the roof caved in.
One heck of a snow load on the roof!
“ destroyed the building”
Doesn’t look destroyed to me.
It's time for SCOTUS to reverse the Kelo v. New London decision.

Isn’t it strange only the front facade blew out?
With the roof collapsing, I would have expected the side walls to collapse.
Eyewitnesses say they heard a big boom and watched the church collapse. Was the collapse from a real bomb?
There’s got to be a better architectural name for the center tower than ‘roof’.
I think the front center tower collapsed on itself and took the roof out. Look how tall it was and then look at the debris on the ground. There doesn’t seem to be enough of it. Most of it would be inside. Looks like a safe demolition.
No way a wood beamed roof could destroy a stone structure. The beams are in the wrong direction.
Dr. Hannibal Lecter is following closely.
See Thomas Harris novels for context. Dr. Lecter follows church roof collapses as a fetish.
LOL.
Steeple.
That’s a lot of weight in stone, supported by what looks to be not very robust timbers.

If the church was bought for $250k in 2015, there must have been major known issues then.
