Thank you very much for posting these beautiful works of art and may God bless and keep you for doing so.
Wanted to let you know how appreciative I am that you continue to post your archives. I am doing the Chronological Bible Readings in 90 days and love referring to the pics.
Angels, always with the wings, angels.....................
Together with the stained glass windows, favorites are #7 by the 19th c. Spanish artist Bernardino Montañés;
#12 Murillo;
#18 mosaic from San Vitale Basilica in Ravenna. The splendid mosaics are some of the finest examples of Byzantine art.
#38
Thanks for your well-wishes, which I reciprocate.
Thanks, Pat. God inspired these artists for a reason.
The Tissot (36) and McDonald (40) are marvelous.
It is an epic story of redemption, through the many stumbles and mis-steps by both Abraham and Sarah, the purpose and the promise remain.
That’s their ID tag.....................
You have an appreciative soul, Alba.
As I said yesterday....
I find it interesting that No. 3 uses the term “Holy Trinity” and not “Angels”.
To be sure, there are ‘creatures’ in the Bible that are described with wings, i.e. Ezekiel’s visions, but somehow they have been conflated with angels (messengers) and the Medieval and Renaissance artists melded the two and even added a touch of Greek mythology as a kicker (HERMES/MERCURY).
I don’t know if this was done out of ignorance or artistic license, but it’s interesting to note that not all the artists did the same.....................
Good catch. I (almost) always post the titles I find, as I did here.
It’s impossible to know (a) who created that title and (b) what was meant. After all, they were indeed a [lower-case] holy trinity.
My supposition is that artists include wings (1) in lieu of identification tags, and (2) because they’re fun to paint.
If I were painting you, you’d have a red badge, a Marine t-shirt, a cross on a gold chain, an adoring wife in the background, while sitting at a computer with a Florida hurricane blowing outside, with your right index finger on the period.
with your right index finger on the period...............................
Well, except for the ‘adoring wife’ part, you’d be correct.
I’m wearing the Marine Corps Tee shirt this very minute!..............
all of the artistic approaches are very different from each other, but they are all quality
thank you for sharing
blessings
Glad you approve.
