A new Pew Research Center in-depth report, “Spirituality Among Americans,” revealed that “7 in 10 U.S. adults describe themselves as spiritual in some way, including 22% who are spiritual but not religious.”

The 95-page report released on Thursday found that:

83% of all U.S. adults believe people have a soul or spirit in addition to their physical body.

81% say there is something spiritual beyond the natural world, even if we cannot see it.

74% say there are some things that science cannot possibly explain.

45% say they have had a sudden feeling of connection with something from beyond this world.

38% say they have had a strong feeling that someone who has passed away was communicating with them from beyond this world.

30% say they have personally encountered a spirit or unseen spiritual force.

That makes the majority of Americans open to spiritual deception. They don’t measure the good through objectivity, but subjectivity.

Very true. The intentionally non-committal “spirituality” without acceptance and obedience to the one true God is just an open invitation to be influenced by demons masquerading as all kinds of things. And in the nominally “Christian” world, those in the charismatic movement are similarly wide open to deception because they prioritize ecstatic emotional experiences and direct revelation from sources they refuse to test over the Gospel and true revelation provided in scripture. Both groups are being led by their emotions, which is the surest path to spiritual deception.

Religion often involves organized beliefs, rituals, and a community, while spirituality is a more personal, subjective experience focused on inner peace, connection to the divine, or a sense of purpose. Religion often provides a framework, doctrines, and specific practices, whereas spirituality can be more flexible and individualized. People may identify with one, both, or neither.

Perhaps it’s simply a matter of striving for a “sustainable” feeling of well-being but not at the expense of others.

Very true. And that's a real danger for individuals and the country as a whole.

High sensitivity to the spiritual world and extremely low critical thinking skills combined are a recipe for disaster.

And for those that do “accept and obey the one true God” and “ test revelation against the Gospel and true scripture” but don’t attend formal religion with the hypocrisy and belief that one is born a christian; along with other specific beliefs that are not in the Bible but imposed by various denominations?

Thank you for posting that. I’ve always wondered what people meant by “spiritual.” Because I am neither religious nor spiritual, but whenever I’d indicate that I wasn’t religious, people would always follow it up with, “but you consider yourself spiritual, don’t you?” And I’d just be baffled. Like... what? I do like candles and incense, does that count? LOL!

Religion is, in and of itself, sinful and a poke in Jesus’ eye.....

New International Version
“You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.”

And all religions have their versions of the law that they say you have to follow...

One of the most ignorant lies people tell themselves is that they are spiritual but not religious.

They desire a form of godliness but denying the power of God. 2 Timothy 3:5-7

Pagan America. It allows for a lot of delusions, like, “Women can have penises!”

Very true.

I wonder what percentage of those who labeled themselves as *spiritual* are actually Christians, that is having a saving faith relationship with Jesus Christ.

the survey responses “illustrate the difficulty of separating ‘spirituality’ from ‘religion’ and suggest that for many Americans, there is no clear dividing line.”
.....................................

The distinction between the two is religion is man-made culture.
