Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 21
Paul Speaks to the Crowd
37 As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, “May I say something to you?”
“Do you speak Greek?” he replied. 38 “Aren’t you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness some time ago?”
39 Paul answered, “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.”
40 After receiving the commander’s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic[a]:

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Holy and Almighty God,
We praise Your Holy Name!
For You Alone are Worthy of Praise and Worship,
For You Alone Are The One True God.
Omniscient, Omnipotent, and Omnipresent,
Glorious in Majesty
Awesome and Fearsome in Power and Glory!
How Righteous, Holy, and Just You Are!
Teach us To Stand Firm,
And to not waver in our Faith.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Back in the olden days when I was in Junior High, we were required to memorize Shakespeare. That wasn't a problem for me, as I had memorized several Gilbert & Sullivan operas, but there was a difference in the language. G&S was in Victorian English, while Shakespeare was in Elizabethan English. However, I soldiered on, and can still recite "All the World's a Stage" and "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" from memory...not that ANYONE would want to hear me do it.
Today's Reading has a little point of contention with translations that should be addressed. The King James Version says that Paul addressed the crowd "in the Hebrew Tongue". The NIV, which I use for clarity and simplicity, says that Paul spoke to the crowd in "Aramaic". Well, of course, this bothered me so I found this page, and it becomes much more clear: (All the English Translations of Acts 21:40).
Just as G&S and Shakespeare are both English, Aramaic and Hebrew are both the "Hebrew Tongue". Since Hebrew was the language of Scholarship and Prayer, it is more likely that Paul addressed the crowd in Aramaic. Obviously, they had no trouble understanding and reacting to what Paul said in his address.
Just as the Hebrew Tongue had different ways of expression, so did Greek, another one of Paul's Languages (He probably spoke Latin too). There is Classical Greek, which was the language of the Scholars and Philosophers, and Koine Greek, which was the Language of Everyday Usage. Interestingly, the New Testament, while preeminent in the Canon of Classical Literature, and explores the Mysteries of the Universe, is in Koine Greek, the Language of the People.

Psalm 6
To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger,
or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.
3 My soul also is struck with terror,
while you, O Lord—how long?
4 Turn, O Lord, save my life;
deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of you;
in Sheol who can give you praise?
6 I am weary with my moaning;
every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with my weeping.
7 My eyes waste away because of grief;
they grow weak because of all my foes.
8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my supplication;
the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.

Thanks for sharing what you found on the different languages. I’m thankful Lord Jesus makes Himself known in the noon-elite language of the common people so we could know Him. So much so even a child can understand Him! He truly became one of us. Thank you Lord Jesus!
