Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 13

On Cyprus

4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.

6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

An Election is coming up, and it is CRUCIAL for the future of our country. The thing about elections is, that, although we rejoice when our choice wins, we have no control over our candidate's choice of advisors. Right after the victory, our celebrations are hampered by our own arguments over the President's Cabinet choices.

"YIKES! Don't pick HER...she's inexperienced!"

"Oh No! Don't pick HIM...he's too liberal!"

"HIM? No no no...he's sure to have some skeletons in HIS closet!"

And so on.

But we have no control over these choices, and have to hope that our Guy knows what he's doing. And if our fears do come to pass...well we just have to keep in prayer for Our nation's leaders, that they will be protected and guided in their decisions.

This Procounsel appears to have been a decent, intelligent man, but he seems to have surrounded himself with bad advisors. Like Cornelius in Chapter 8, The Procounsel had gone a bit "native", by having a local resident on his staff and being influenced by him. However, in Cornelius's case, the local religion led to him loving the God of the Jews, and eventually coming to Faith in the Jewish Messiah. In the Procounsel's case, the local advisor was influencing him into the occult. This was fairly typical of the Ancient Roman administrators. They were far from home, there was very little communication with their families, and they were surrounded by people who had their own religion and customs. Sometimes they even brought new religions home with them, and Rome was full of temples to Isis, Mithras, and a host of other gods and goddesses.

Elymas the Magician could see that Paul and Barnabas were NOT just preaching another "religion" to add to the ever-growing collection of gods worshiped by the Romans. If it were just that, he would not have advised so strongly against it. No, deep down, he must have known that Paul's message was unique. Yet, even though, he knew that the message was the Truth, he blinded himself against it and schemed to blind the Procounsel as well.

Hence, his punishment of temporary blindness was appropriate!

Prayer For Our Government Leaders

Dear Lord, I lift up all those that are in leadership position in our government, both locally and nationally. May they be endowed with wisdom, strength and justice to administer their duties in a manner that is right and pleasing in Your sight.

Give them the wisdom to rightly and justly administer the law and to carry out their judgements and decisions in the fear of the Lord.

Keep our leaders from adopting humanistic laws, which are so contrary to Your truth. Guard their consciences from being seared by so much that is flooding the corridors of world power today and give each one wisdom, insight and integrity in the decisions they have to reach, and may we live peaceably in this land as we wait for the any day return of the Lord Jesus Christ to take His church to be with Him into heaven. In Jesus’ name we pray,
