John 17

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

Our Lord and Heavenly Father
You Are Our Faithful God.
And even when we are perfidious,

The copius notes that accompany this Passage in my Study Bible take up more space on the page than the section of Scripture itself. Not only that, the font for the notes is HALF the size of the font of the actual Scriptures. I had to take off my glasses to read the notes, and hold the heavy book up close to my face. Nevertheless, the notes didn't tell me much, only that Jesus calls God "Father" 122 times in the Gospel of John. THis is a very Personal prayer of Jesus, and is only recorded by John. It is very deep, and explores the very Nature of the Trinity. It also affirms the existence of Christ in Eternity past, present, and future, meaning that He is not a "created being" but has been there before the "Beginning". An affirmation of that is embedded in the very first line of the Torah, which states:

אבְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ:
"In the Beginning, God (Aleph Tav) created the heavens and the earth."

The (Aleph-Tav) is like saying "A to Z" in Hebrew.

Now, let's look at the last chapter in the Book of Revalation (New Testament):

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." (Revelation 22:13)

This is in the last chapter of the last Book in the Bible. Since the new Testament is written in Greek, "Alpha and Omega" means the same thing as "Aleph-Tav", which is also "A to Z" in English.

The other Three Synoptic gospels are very sparing with the words of Jesus's Prayer at Gethsemane. John lifts the veil and shares some more, and it is awesome. But even this is just a small segment of the prayer that night. John and the other Disciples kept nodding off to sleep. Perhaps this is all we are meant to know at this stage in our walk to Eternity.

This Prayer, sometimes called the "High Priestly Prayer of Jesus", is in three parts. First Jesus prays for Himself, presenting Himself to the Father to do the Father's will that He will fulfill the mission set before Him. Then He prays for His Disciples. Lastly, He prays for the world.
