Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

John 16

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

The Dentist smiles and says' "Open your mouth now, this won't hurt a bit." And then, IT HURTS! What's with that?

The "feminist" says, "Oh it's just a simple procedure. You'll be up and about in no time and forget it ever happened" And then a woman suffers pain, loss, and guilt for the rest of her life.

"Join my religion," says a phony Preacher, "And you'll never be sick or sad again!" And then, "LIFE" intervenes.

Jesus did not play games with His Disciples. He told them that, yes, in this life you WILL have tribulation. He compares it to a woman giving birth, and YES, It DOES HURT. But when the labor is over, there is a new child, a new human being, a new member of the family. The pain turns to joy, and the trauma of labor is forgotten. If we take nothing else from today's reading but one line, let it be this one:

"In This World You Will Have Trouble. But Take Heart, For I Have Overcome The World."

Jesus presents The Holy Spirit as "The Comforter". Not only does The Holy Spirit comfort us, He also teaches, consoles, inspires, leads, counsels, strengthens, and gives us the right words to say when we need them. He also does something that is not so much fun: He convicts us of sin in our lives. "Conviction" is not the same as "Condemnation", which comes from the enemy of our souls. The enemy has many names, one of which is "The Accuser". Here are a few tips on how to tell the difference:

1. Conviction brings about an understanding that the sin exists and is displeasing to God. Condemnation just brings GUILT.

2. Conviction has a solution:( Repent, Forgive, Make Amends, Ask God for Help in Overcoming Sin, etc) Condemnation just makes you feel worthless and helpless so you might just as well go on sinning.

3. Conviction brings about Renewal. Condemnation brings about Despair.

4. Condemnation is usually Loud and Obnoxious, and crowds out all thoughts of Redemption and Correction. Conviction, on the other hand, is usually a Small, Still Voice.

Sometimes, the Accuser will offer "solutions" that are worse than the sin itself. But Remember:

1. The Cover-Up is Worse Than The Crime.

2. One Lie Naturally Leads To Another to Support it...and Another, And Another.

3. And, the old adage "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right" is absolutely True.

4. If the "solution" is either immoral, unscriptural, or ethically sketchy, it is NOT coming from The Holy Spirit.

Faith overcomes Fear, because Jesus has already Triumphed. He has Overcome the World, and, with the help of Our Counselor, you shall too.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
