John 14

Jesus the Way to the Father

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

It is a small section like this one that makes me love John's Gospel so much. We have real dinner table conversation, real people (Thomas and Philip) asking real, normal questions of their Teacher, questions that many of us may have asked. We even have a gentle rebuke from the Master, followed immediately by a breathtaking teaching and a promise of comfort. It's just like being there.

Since I am a Musician and Artist, I socialize with people who have some strange ideas. Perhaps it comes with the territory of the Creative Arts, but sometimes it gets a little weird. The politics are mostly liberal (although I DO get a zinger in now and then), and the spirituality is very "esoteric". A favorite aphorism about God is "All roads lead to God" or some such thing. Some worship the Earth, and use an old Greek Pagan name for the "mother goddess", Gaia. They have even cloaked "Gaia" in scientific respectability by linking her to the science of ecology and meteorology. The Truth is so obvious. All roads DO NOT lead to God. Some, like the neo-paganism of the Nazis, or the death cults of Kali, lead to murder and genocide. We see the results of fanatical false religion's attempts to destroy Civilization in our own century. There are many roads, but only One leads to God. Jesus said, "I Am The Way."

Another thing I run into frequently is the very question Pilate asked Jesus. "What is Truth?". This is expressed in the philosophy of Relativism, or "What's true for you may not be true for me." However, that doesn't wash when one is dealing with reality. A person can say that they don't believe in gravity, yet they are not likely to jump out of a plane without a parachute. Buddha is said to have passed on with these words, "I am still searching for Truth." Jesus said, "I AM the Truth."

The Age of Space Exploration has been an awesome part of my life for over 50 years. One of the biggest parts of this endeavor has been the Search for Life on other planets. SETI, which is a collective term for this effort, gets all excited whenever an odd radio signal appears, or when a meteorite shows signs that it may have hosted some one-celled creature. Robotic Rovers comb Mars every day, searching for something...anything...that might indicate that life exists or existed in the past, on Mars. And of course, we keep hoping that Voyager will send back a message even after it has left our Solar System. We search and search for LIFE. Jesus said "I AM the Life."

One of my daily tasks in the production of this Thread is the search for appropriate images to share. My search words today were "I Am The Way, The Truth, and The Life". A lot of beautiful images came up, but most of them attribute the quote to "ANONYMOUS". It's NOT "Anonymous"! Everybody knows Jesus said these words. I find it interesting that whoever composed those images just could bear to state the obvious. Makes you wonder....
