John 4

Many Samaritans Believe

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.

42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

Because of one woman's testimony, a number of people believe. They beg Jesus to stay with them, and He does, for a few days, teaching. As far as this account goes, there are no big miracles or even healings, but the people believe, based upon testimony and teaching. It is a wonderful comment on the character of the town, that they were willing to listen and weigh the testimony, and come to faith based upon only that. We shall see that some people, even with miracles, still are faithless. It seems that Jesus knew who needed what in order to believe.

While that little town in Samaria didn't seem to need a miracle, there is another little town that really DOES. That town was once the seat of Hawaiian Royalty, a Whaling Town like Nantucket, the place where Herman Melville wrote Moby Dick, and a town where I spent many happy hours perusing Art Galleries, Snorkeling the Coral Reef, Parasailing, Motorcycling, and enjoying the Art, Culture, and Hospitality of Hawai'i. Right now, there is nothing left of the town but ashes. Buildings that have stood for nearly 200 years are gone. Over 50 people have lost their lives, and there are many more crowding the hospitals with burns and smoke inhalation.

Please say a prayer for the People of Lahaina, Maui. Thanks.
