Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

John 1

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God
Hallowed Be Your Most Holy and Sacred Name,
How we love You,
With Our Whole Heart
Our Whole Soul
Our Whole Mind
And Our Whole Strength!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise
Awesome in Power
And Wonderful Beyond Measure!
How Magnificent that You have Chosen to Manifest Yourself
In Such Magnificent Ways
To Call us to Your Purpose
What a Privilege and Honor to be Touched By You!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Some of you may remember this story from a few years ago:

My Dad was raised in the Commercial Fisheries of Gloucester, MA. By the time he was nine, he spent summers on the two-masted schooner, with his father and slightly older brother Jack, swabbing the decks, helping gut the fish, and doing various other chores around the ship. When a big codfish was hoisted on board, Dad would get out his knife, cut a hole in just the right place, extract the liver, and put it in a jar. He kept the jar on ice, and upon returning to the port, he would sell the jar of cod livers to the Pharmaceutical Company for the making of cod-liver oil, which was the big cure-all medicine of the day. Sometimes he made more with the livers than the shares of the rest of the crew selling the whole fish. That was life during the Depression. You did what you had to do.

What I didn't share at the time was that, at some point, during the Great Depression, my Grandfather (John The Fisherman) inherited a quarter of a million dollars from a long lost relative. In Today's dollars, $250,000.00 would not even buy a one room condo in Boston, but in those days it was a huge sum of money. John the Fisherman did what every good Fisherman would do. He bought a huge house next to the mayor on Ashmont Hill, got a big car with a chauffeur, and went to the Pub and bought rounds for everybody, every night. The money was depleting so rapidly that the family lawyers stepped in and put it in a trust for the seven children. Fishermen are not known for their "stability". (Kind of like musicians, I guess!).

Back in 1984, my husband and I went on a tour of Israel. At the time, we were able to obtain a visa to also visit Lebanon. We had a friend who operated a radio station just across the border near the Israeli town of Metulla. Just as we were boarding the bus to cross into Lebanon, we got a phone call from the Army. There had been a car bomb in the very town we were scheduled to visit, so PLEASE DON'T GO. We didn't, but the friend was able to cross the "Good Fence" and visit with us. Years later, I heard that he was murdered when somebody bombed his Radio Station. Lebanon has been unstable for a long time.

Speaking of that area, I figured that while we were in the Middle East, it would be really nice to visit the Ancient City of Petra. This amazing World Heritage site was carved out of solid rock by the Nabateans centuries ago. I asked if such a thing was possible, but was told that if we had Israeli stamps on our Passport, we would not be allowed into Jordan. If I wanted to visit Petra, I would have to renew my Passport and enter from a different country. Evidently, from the link above, you can see that this is no longer the case. However, I learned very quickly that, when visiting a Foreign Country, you go by Their Rules. The situation is so unstable over there that, even when you obey the rules, you can still get into trouble. (Let me interject here that it is very safe to visit Israel, and Jerusalem is safer than most American cities. Just obey the rules, and be respectful of the Holy Sites. A small thing to ask.)

The common theme running through Today's Little Stories is instability. From Fishermen, Musicians, Borders, and Nations, instability is the normal state of things. Jacob even referred to his Firstborn, Reuben, as "Unstable as Water" (Genesis 49). It seems to be a prerequisite for Action, and Simon the Fisherman was a prime example. Simon was fearless, impulsive, rough speaking, and boastful, which are hallmarks of instability. It was Simon who cut off Malchus's ear, who boasted that he would not leave Jesus and then denied Him, and even walked on water for a bit before realizing what he was doing.

In their very first meeting, Jesus gives Simon the Fisherman a new name. Jesus calls him "Cephus" which means "Rock". That was like naming a bald man "Curly".

Don't ever let it be said that Jesus didn't have a sense of humor.

Psalm 15

A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy hill?

2 Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right,
and speak the truth from their heart;
3 who do not slander with their tongue,
and do no evil to their friends,
nor take up a reproach against their neighbours;
4 in whose eyes the wicked are despised,
but who honour those who fear the Lord;
who stand by their oath even to their hurt;
5 who do not lend money at interest,
and do not take a bribe against the innocent.

Those who do these things shall never be moved.
