The beatification date has been announced for Józef and Wiktoria Ulma and their seven children, who were killed by the Nazis for hiding a Jewish family in their home in Poland.
The Archdiocese of Przemyska announced Tuesday that the entire Ulma family — including one unborn child — will be beatified on Sept. 10.
Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, the prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, will preside over the beatification ceremony in Markowa, the village in southeast Poland where the Ulma family was executed in 1944.
Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of the couple and their children in a decree signed in December. The World Holocaust Remembrance Center has honored the Ulmas as Righteous Among the Nations for the sacrifice of their lives.
Early on March 24, 1944, a Nazi patrol surrounded the home of Józef and Wiktoria Ulma on the outskirts of the village of Markowa in southeast Poland. They discovered eight Jewish people who had found refuge on the Ulma farm and executed them.
The Nazi police then killed Wiktoria, who was seven months pregnant, and Józef. As children began to scream at the sight of their murdered parents, the Nazis shot them too: Stanisława, age 8, Barbara, 7, Władysław, 6, Franciszek, 4, Antoni, 3, and Maria, 2.
Father Witold Burda, the postulator for the Ulma family, has said that a Bible was found inside the Ulma house in which the parable of the Good Samaritan had been underlined in a red pen.
The postulator added that Józef and Wiktoria were known in their community for being “willing to help anyone who knocked on their door.”
“They built their family on the foundation of faith with fidelity to the two essential commandments: the commandment to love God and the commandment to love one’s neighbor,” Burda said.
This beautiful family is Commemorated at Yad Vashem as “Righteous Gentiles”.
I am happy that their church is recognizing them as well.
the more one learns about them, the more one admires them.
They were ordinary folks, but religious.
They KNEW that the Germans were killing people who aided Jews (even those who just gave them water).
And yet they saved the Jewish families because that was the right thing to do.

Józef and Wiktoria Ulma lived in the village of Markowa in what before the war was the Lwów Voivodeship, and now is the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The village had four and a half thousand residents. During the German occupation, most probably in late 1942, despite poverty and risk, the Ulmas gave shelter to eight Jews: Saul Goldman and his four sons (in Łańcut, they were referred to as the Szalls), and two daughters and a grand-daughter of Chaim Goldman from Markowa – Lea (Layka) Didner with her daughter (name unknown) and Genia (Golda) Grünfeld. The Ulmas were probably denounced to the Germans for harbouring Jews by Włodzimierz Leś, a navy-blue policeman from Łańcut. On March 24, 1944, in the morning, five German gendarmes and several navy-blue policemen arrived in front of the house of the Ulmas. They were commanded by Lt. Eilert Dieken. They first shot the Jews, and next Józef and Wiktoria (who was in the seventh month of pregnancy). Then, Dieken decided to kill the children. Within a few minutes, seventeen people lost their lives (including the baby whom Wiktoria started giving birth to at the moment of the execution).
In 1995, Wiktoria and Józef Ulma were posthumously awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” title. In 2010, they were honoured with the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński. In 2003, the Ulmas’ beatification process was initiated in the Diocese of Przemyśl, and is currently under way at the Vatican.

Salvation comes from entrusting yourself to Christ alone.
God calls all those who entrust themselves to Christ alone for forgiveness of sin and salvation “saints.”
They were either saved before death or will never be now.
They were either saints before death or will never be afterwards.
May they have entrusted themselves to Christ alone for salvation while they had time.
Just watched “Schindler’s List” again the other night. It’s hard for a normal, sane person to wrap their head around what happened back then.
This article uses the words killed and executed, but not the more accurate word murdered. That’s what the NAZIs did, they murdered millions of good people.
“It’s hard for a normal, sane person”... to recognize and accept what has been happening since almost the beginning of time. Man without God, man without principles, man without law, can easily fall into the depths of degradation as men and women have been doing for thousands of years.
