Luke 23

The Death of Jesus

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e] When he had said this, he breathed his last.

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Dear Heavenly Father
You Are Our Rock and Our Fortress.
You Alone Are Our Place of Safety.
You Are The Holy One,
The God of Infinite Justice.
Holy and Righteous beyond Measure,
Glorious and Awesome beyond Imagination.
Emblazon in Our Minds and Hearts
That You Are a The One True Judge,
And The One Who Will Bring About Righteousness.
We Humbly Ask For Justice to Prevail.
We Ask That You bring all that has been hidden out into the daylight.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Last night I hung out in the A/C watching a series of very weird videos. They were a new genre of video called "Reaction Videos", and film the reactions of people from different cultures as they listen to iconic rock songs or watch classic movies for the first time. The movies that elicited to most dramatic response were JAWS and Titanic. During the most intense scenes, the three generations of men (Grandfather, Dad, and Two Sons) showed genuine terror on their faces and howled in the Hindi Language "OH MY GOD! MY GOD! ONLY GOD CAN SAVE THEM NOW!!" The Grandpa looked like he was going to have a heart attack.

Even though they knew it was only a movie, their reactions were as if they were watching something that was really happening. I remember when JAWS first came out, people were running out of the theater retching. The movie setting was supposed to be an island off Cape Cod, and there was a movement to ban it from Cape theaters because it was bad for business.

Now, when we look back at the film, we are amazed that anyone could have been so scared. The special effects were quite primitive, and the mechanical shark was always breaking down and giving Spielberg a LOT of trouble. They have even closed down the JAWS Ride at Universal Theme Park because it just wasn't scary anymore.

The Roman Centurion at the Cross, whose name was supposedly Longinus, was an officer in charge of 100 soldiers, and was probably directing the Crucifixion. He was using a method of execution which the Romans had been using for a while, and had most likely seen hundreds of criminals executed this cruel way. Legend has it that it was Longinus's spear that pierced the side of Jesus, proving that He had, indeed, died on the Cross. If Jesus had just been an ordinary man, this would have been an ordinary execution.

And yet, Luke tells us that something happened to the centurion upon witnessing the Death of Christ. He was changed in an instant. Just like the "Good" thief on the cross next to Jesus, who was mocking one minute and praying the next, a miracle took place in Longinus's heart. The Early Church revered both Longinus and the Thief (whom they named Demas) and considered them among the first of the Gentile Saints.
