Luke 22

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod

66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”

He replied, “You say that I am.”

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

Mom was a lifelong Democrat till she voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980. She really liked Harry Truman because of his honesty and plain speaking. She was impressed that Truman paid for his own Postage in his private correspondence, even though, as President, he had "Franking Privileges". Her favorite thing about Truman was that he had a sign on his desk that said:

"THE BUCK STOPS HERE."

This, of course, alluded to the time-honored practice of "Passing the Buck", which occurs in families, business, and politics. While sometimes it is necessary to "pass the buck" up to someone who has more authority to get things done, it is more often used as a way to avoid responsibility. Let someone else do it and suffer the consequences!

Since Luke is the only Evangelist that included the visit to Herod, it was a part of the Passion Story that I had not heard as a child, as most liturgies read the Gospels accounts of Matthew and John. In fact, the first time I heard of this incident was in "Jesus Christ Superstar" with Herod's blasphemous little ditty "So You Are The Christ?" That's because the libretto for Jesus Christ Superstar was drawn from the Gospel of Luke.

Luke carries this amazing little detail that is a perfect example of how politicians pass the buck. Everybody in the chain knew that Jesus wasn't guilty of any wrongdoing. From the High Priest, who prophesied that "one Man would have to die for the nation", to the Sanhedrin who passed the buck to Pilate, to Pilate who passed the buck to Herod, to Herod who passed the buck back to Pilate, to Pilate who passed the buck to the crowd for the release of Barabbas, and then washing his hands of the whole affair, to the crowd who made demands for the execution and passed the buck to the Romans to do the deed. None wanted to take responsibility, but they were all responsible.

What would have happened in History if just ONE person had said:

"THE BUCK STOPS HERE."

Lord I am sorry for my constant anger. At those within and those without. My sleep departs from me, I no longer seem to be able to have a restful night. Now here I am again at 3 am unable to quell the thoughts and anger I feel for the wilful blindness people impose upon themselves. For the ignorant mocking blather of those outside and the yawning indifference of so many inside.
And most of all for the fool in the mirror for not having the courage of his convictions.
Lord You know I believe but “help thou my unbelief “ in Jesus blessed name. Amen
