Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 22

Peter Disowns Jesus

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

At some time in the dim past, some domesticated chickens got loose on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. Since the weather was glorious, and there were no large predators around, these chickens were fruitful and multiplied exponentially. They became quite "cocky", and took over lawns, beaches, golf courses, and parking lots. They were so ubiquitous that they became the symbol of the Island. The roosters could be pretty aggressive at times, and woke up the whole island before sunrise with their crowing.

Since my husband and I owned a timeshare unit on Kauai, we went there a lot, and there seemed to be more chickens every time we went there.

Now, Kauai is a tiny island and is quite isolated from the rest of the chain. All the commodities have to be brought in from elsewhere through the main harbor in Lihue. For some reason, during one visit, there was a shortage of chicken. My favorite Chicken Teriyaki Plate Lunch was unavailable. So was a Chicken Roll-Up Sandwich. Everything I asked for was "out".

"So sorry, Shortage of Chicken on Kauai right now!"

It was the response for everything I requested. Suddenly, a Rooster crowed and strutted by with his harem of about twenty Feral Kauai Chickens. I asked the waitress if they could kill a couple of those chickens and make me a sandwich.

"Of Course Not! Those are KAUAI Chickens. They're the Symbol of Our Island!"

It was as though I had asked for a Bald Eagle Sandwich.

People think that Roosters only crow in the morning, but they crow at other time too, mostly when they just feel like it. In the story of Peter's Denial, we read in the other Gospels that Peter heard the Rooster crow once, while he was still in the process of denying Jesus three times. Then he hears it again. The first time was a warning which Peter ignored. The second time was the fulfillment of the Prophecy of Jesus at the Last Supper table.

Most of the time when we are tempted or even engaged in sin, God graciously gives us a warning. It may be a "Red Flag", a gut feeling, or even words from a concerned friend. Like Peter, we often choose to ignore the warning. The second crowing of the rooster is the "NOW you've gone and done it!" signal.

Choosing not to see the signs is like saying that there is a chicken shortage on Kauai.

The Truth is right there, but we choose not to see it.
