Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 22

The Last Supper

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

The following is something I wrote several years ago, and came up in my image search:

I was struggling with finding a story for you today, and while eating breakfast was watching "The History of the Electric Guitar" on the Smithsonian Channel. The documentary related an incident that occurred in 1965, when I was 13 years old and learning to play my own acoustic guitar, which I had received for Christmas in 1963.

The documentary made a passing reference to The Newport Folk Festival, when Bob Dylan showed up with a Fender Stratocaster instead of his usual "Folk Guitar". The documentary reported that the audience "booed instead of cheered", and that is how I had remembered it as well. I had learned "folk style" on my acoustic, using Dylan's songs (Blowin' in the Wind", "Don't Think Twice" etc) and I felt betrayed.

Years later, I saw an interview with Dylan, and learned what really happened that day. Pete Seeger, a card-carrying communist, had wanted to have Dylan be his mouthpiece, and use music to change the politics of America. Dylan had always wanted to play Rock and Roll, but Seeger insisted he channel his creativity into "The Revolution". Dylan, being a very creative soul, chafed against this, and one can hear his soul groaning under Seeger's yoke in songs like "It Ain't Me, Babe", "Positively 4th Street", and "Maggie's Farm." Indeed, it was an electrified, angry "Maggie's Farm" that was the opening song at Newport. Seeger was livid. He could see that Dylan was not going to be his "boy" any longer. At that point, he picked up a fireman's hatchet and was making motions to hack away at the high voltage electrical cables that were powering Dylan's act onstage. (This could have caused a massive fire or explosion, God knows what!). Anyway, Joan Baez, another communist but also Dylan's lover at the time rushed over and restrained Seeger's hand, and disaster was avoided.

When Dylan told this story on film, his eyes filled up and he said it was the worst hurt that he had ever experienced in his life, and has never quite gotten over it. When I saw the interview, I realized that Seeger was the betrayer, not Dylan. As soon as he realized that he could no longer control Dylan to advance his agenda, he was willing to endanger thousands of people at the festival and commit mayhem.

Luke gives us a very brief description of the Last Supper. His chronology differs a little bit from the other Evangelists, as he places the Consecration of the Bread and the Wine prior to the discussion of betrayal. It may be that Luke wanted to put what he felt was the most important feature of the Supper first. Luke also includes the part about the swords. Jesus says that the disciples should buy A sword. Peter says, "Hey, I got TWO of them!", to which Jesus replies "That's Enough." Here is a hidden pun that I don't think anyone has ever brought up. It just occurred to me, and I may be off the wall with this, but here goes:

"That's Enough!" in Hebrew is one word: "Dayenu". It could be a Mother scolding a fussy child, or too much food on a plate. But, it is also a Hebrew Song that speaks of the overwhelming Grace and Generosity of God. Here It Is.

To make things even more ionic, "Dayenu" is a PASSOVER Song.

We know that, in the Garden, Peter used ONE of those swords to cut off the ear of Malchus, a servant. Jesus rebuked Peter, and healed Malchus's ear. So it would seem that even one sword was "Enough", and maybe one too many.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 143

A Psalm of David.

1 Hear my prayer, O Lord;
give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness;
answer me in your righteousness.
2 Do not enter into judgement with your servant,
for no one living is righteous before you.

3 For the enemy has pursued me,
crushing my life to the ground,
making me sit in darkness like those long dead.
4 Therefore my spirit faints within me;
my heart within me is appalled.

5 I remember the days of old,
I think about all your deeds,
I meditate on the works of your hands.
6 I stretch out my hands to you;
my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
Selah

7 Answer me quickly, O Lord;
my spirit fails.
Do not hide your face from me,
or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.
8 Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.

9 Save me, O Lord, from my enemies;
I have fled to you for refuge.*
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
Let your good spirit lead me
on a level path.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life.
In your righteousness bring me out of trouble.
12 In your steadfast love cut off my enemies,
and destroy all my adversaries,
for I am your servant.

Amen, left that other site

Also, the Beatles song “Revolution” is really quite anti-revolution:

You say you’ll change the Constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well, you know
You’d better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don’t you know know it’s gonna be
Alright ...

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
