Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

Yesterday, I visited my brother who is recovering from a stroke. Your prayers are working. The hemiparesis on his face is almost completely gone, and his speech is better. His wife told me that he was able to go up and down stairs with assistance, and is eating well. (One of the reasons my brother demanded to be sprung from the hospital was because the food was so bad!) We sat on the couch and chatted, as a Mystery Program flickered on the TV. The female lead looked so familiar to me.

"Who is that actress?" I asked.

"She played 'Stands-With-Fist' in Dances With Wolves" said my brother.

Names are proper nouns, and a person's name is very important to him. Many years ago, I had a daily internet correspondence with an old man who was a pure-blooded Tonto Apache (a smaller clan of the bigger Tribe), and he gave me the name "Day Brightener" because he looked forward to my posts every morning to brighten his day. The site on which we connected suddenly came crashing down (worse than even the MySpace fiasco) and I lost touch with him. This was nearly twenty years ago, so the old man is probably deceased now. However, I still post something every day right here on this Thread, so I guess I can still use my Native American name. Names are very important to Native American People, and have to be earned.

In the Bible, names are often changed when a person becomes a disciple of God. This most notably happened with Abram and Sarai, who became AbraHam and SaraH. The "H" in their names is symbolic of the Presence of God in the Form of the Holy Spirit, whose Name in both Hebrew and Greek is translated as "Breath". ("H" sounds like a breath, and appears TWICE in the Tetragrammaton). Jacob got renamed "Israel", Hoshea got renamed "Joshua", and Simon got renamed "Peter". Saul became "Paul", and there are other examples as well.

The name "Judas" has become synonymous with the word "Traitor" in our language. It is actually a Greek version of "Judah", the very Tribe that both King David and Jesus were descended from. Scholars have been trying to figure out Judas for 2000 years, because it seems so incomprehensible that anyone would betray Jesus. Both Luke and John give us a clue: "...Satan entered into him..."

Being betrayed is one thing, but being betrayed by a friend is quite another. Many of us have been on the receiving end of this. I dare to say that some of us may have even been the betrayer. If a person who actually walked with Jesus and listened to Him for three years could do it, how much more could an ordinary person be caught up in it? Whether the motivation is greed, lust, politics, or pride, it is very easy to slip into the role of Judas. As Peter said:

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour(1 Peter 5:8)

It's easier to become a Judas than you think.
