Luke 21

The Widow’s Offering

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Forty years ago, I worked in a Christian Bookstore that sold everything from Bibles to Church Vestments, to the Latest Contemporary Christian Music records. We also carried the Textbooks for a local Liberal Seminary, and had a satellite location at the seminary itself. One of the items we sold were "Collection Plates". These large, basin-sized plates were made of brass or Chrome, and had a wide rim so that they could be passed from person to person along the pews. Covering the bottom of the plate was a soft velvet pad. Sometimes this was embroidered with a religious symbol, but it was always soft velvet. I theorized that the pad was there to dampen the sound of coins going into the plate.

Was this merely for noise abatement? Or was it perhaps meant to alleviate any embarrassment a person might have donating a few coins. It could be that the person was being cheap, or it could be that a few coins was all he or she had. In any case, it would be unseemly to advertise to the whole congregation with a loud KA-CHING as two little coins go into the plate!

The Widow in the story could not conceal the sound of the two little coins (the smallest coins in the currency) made their noisy way down the trumpet-shaped collection tube. In fact, the very shape of the bronze tube would actually amplify the sound. It may have even turned heads towards her as she made her offering.

It was a perfect opportunity for Jesus to teach a very important lesson about giving.

It's not what's in the hand that counts. It's what's in the Heart behind the hand.
