Luke 20

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

Our Father in Heaven,
How Blessed and Glorious is Your Most Wonderful and Holy Name!
How Perfect Your Plan and Your Promise,
And How Magnificent Your Precepts and Your Provision.
You See The Beginning From The End,
And The End from The Beginning.

So sorry for the late start today. I waked too far with the dog this morning, and the heat was really intense. I had re-injured the same knee that I worked so hard to fix, and now it is bothering me again. Grrrr. I got so flustered I posted the illustrations for TOMORROW'S post Today. There is now way to edit it, so you got a sneak preview. For the rest of today's thread, I will be posting pictures of Jesus arguing with the Pharisees, as appropriate with Today's Reading.

Now that that's cleared up, let's begin.

In Today's brief passage, Jesus warns us about the "Teachers of the Law". In context, He is speaking of Religious Leaders, but His words could apply to nearly every institution,: Political, Social, Legal, and even Charitable.

Nowhere do we see the hideous concept of legalism carried to the ultimate extreme than in the Healthcare System. My own personal physician has left the Practice because, in his words, he "doesn't like the way things are done in Medicine these days." My Mom's own personal physician said the exact same words to her over 30 YEARS ago. It occurred around the same time that HMOs were making inroads into the Healthcare System in Boston. All of a sudden, the Insurance Companies were running your personal healthcare. We began to see terms like "Out of Network", "Yearly Deductibles", "Approved Prescription Formularies", and "Co-Payments". At first, it seemed a convenient and low-cost way to get healthcare, but as the Rules and Regulations piled up, some of us longed for the good old days when one had Catastrophic Health Insurance for the Big Stuff, but went to your own doctor when you were sick.

The System has been further complicated by Obamacare, which had so many Rules and Regulations that they have become entrenched, despite the passage of time.

I've seen it first hand, trying to help my Sister get help for a Mystery Bowel Ailment, and a Brother who just had a Stroke. The "System" is saying "My Way or the Highway", and my siblings both have the rebellious streak that seems to run in my family (LOL). In any case, I am the one with the computer and the printer, and I'm pretty good at filling out forms. So I am helping them both, not because I HAVE to, but because I WANT to. So thank you for bearing with me.

The Religious Establishment in Jesus's day were similar to the Healthcare System of Today. Both operate under a Government, which has it's set of Rules and Regulations. The Religious Leaders not only had to answer to God, but had to answer to the Roman Empire. The Healthcare Workers have to answer to the Insurance Companies, who, in turn, have to answer to the U.S. Government (notice I did NOT say "The US Constitution"). It is a very tangled web that departs completely from either pure and simple Religious Faith or the Healing Profession. I think the analogy is a good one, especially since I am embroiled in it as we speak!

The government run health care system we have now is what we all was warned about decades ago. Anything centrally controlled only serves itself.

And the culprits of all of these evil systems are the “law givers” of all kinds.
