Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 20
The Resurrection and Marriage
27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[b] 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over All The Earth!
The Heavens Declare Your Glory,
And All of Your Creation Sings Your Praises!
Holy, Righteous, Just, and True,
Who is Like You?
There is No Other.
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
Help Us To Worship You in Spirit and In Truth,
And not just "go through the motions",
risking Your Great Wrath.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. It's Presidential Primary Season again, which means we will be enduring Forums, Debates, "Gotcha" Questions, Gossip, Scandal, Slander, and everything else that goes with it. Very few people actually change their minds in the course of the year leading up to the General Election, and so, there is a lot of acrimony as well. Each side is committed to what they believe, and both claim to have the truth.
In the time of Jesus, it was no different. The ruling parties agreed on some things, but violently disagreed on others. The Pharisees believed in an Afterlife, and the Sadducees didn't. That's what makes this Passage so ironic. It was a Sadducee who asked Jesus the "Gotcha" Question about marital arrangements in the Afterlife. Jesus knew from the outset that it was an insincere question.
Now, how's this for a coincidence! In my usual Eight-Part Daily Bible Study, I had Today's Passage and Acts 24. I didn't plan it that way,; it just happened. In Acts 24, Paul is on trial before the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Knowing their opposition to each other on the subject of the Afterlife, Paul announces:
"It is for the Resurrection of the Dead that I am on trial today!"
The Pharisees and the Sadducees get into such an argument that Paul is able to end the trial.
To make this "coinkidink" even MORE interesting, I just finished reading a book analyzing Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address. In it are these words:
Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes his aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces; but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered—that of neither has been answered fully. (Full Text at Link)
In the book, there was a lot of source material from different newspapers, most of which panned the speech. Those who were expecting Vengeance did not get it. Those who wanted total Pacifism didn't get that either. Some said that the speech was too short and didn't say anything. I am inclined to think that the Opposition, like the Sadducees in Today's Reading, were not able to trap their target with a "Gotcha" Question, and so, were frustrated in their attempts at winning the argument.
Let's hope that we don't "Lose Friends and Infuriate People" as we exercise our Right To Vote. Debate the Issues, of course, but Enough With The "Gotcha Questions!"
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)
God Bless America.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 123
A Song of Ascents.
1 To you I lift up my eyes,
O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
2 As the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maid
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
until he has mercy upon us.
3 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of contempt.
4 Our soul has had more than its fill
of the scorn of those who are at ease,
of the contempt of the proud.

I’ve heard it said that because the Sadducees did not believe in an afterlife, that’s why they were-—wait of it-—Sad, you see?
