Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 20
The Authority of Jesus Questioned
20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”
3 He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
7 So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8 Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
How Holy,
How Sanctified, and
How Glorious is Your Most Wonderful Name
Your Wisdom and Your Ways Are So Beyond Ours,
Your Justice and Your Righteousness and Your Holiness,
So Infinite and Beyond Our Poor Understanding,
Leaves us breathless!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

One of the big words that Academics like to throw around is Epistemology. As I understand the word, it means the system of basic beliefs from which a person derives his world view. One of the first things taught in Philosophy, Psychology, and Theology courses is that people from different cultures derive their knowledge from different Epistemologies. I would not do well in such a class. as I would be jumping up and challenging the Professor. While there may be many Cultures and many Philosophies, there can be only One Truth. That's the Nature of "Truth". Something is either true, or it isn't.
I would probably get an "F" in that class. Unfortunately, the professor would have the "authority" to flunk me, even though I derived my conclusions from a different Epistemology than my professor. After all, he was teaching that all Epistomologies are equal and valid, except mine.
This brought back a memory of something I wrote back in 2019, and it speaks of Authority and Epistemology:
My beloved Mom loved TV, and one of her favorite programs was the Bob Newhart Show. Newhart played a Psychologist with a group of quirky patients, and was very funny. To narrow things down a bit, her favorite EPISODE of the series was in Season 4, Number 8. (I looked it up using key words) It was titled "What's It All About, Albert?" and was aired on 11/1/1975.
In this episode, Bob questions the efficacy of his profession, and struggles with depression as he examines his life. Has he really helped anyone as a Psychologist? Has he really made a difference in ANYBODY'S life at all? Bob decides that he is going to seek out his mentor, Albert (played by Keenan Wynn) who has been his inspiration since College. Hilarity ensues as Bob pursues his quest, and in the last scene he finally meets up with his old idol.
Laconically, Albert muses on Psychology, all the great names like Freud, Jung, Pavlov, etc, and the therapies; Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, Aversion therapy, etc all the while, Bob eagerly taking it in. Then, Albert looks Bob in the eye and says: "Do you know what I've concluded?"
"What?" Bob eagerly asks, expecting a giant pearl of wisdom.
Albert pauses, looks Bob straight on and says:
"IT' ALL A CROCK!"
Jesus was hounded by a crowd of "Academics" whose Epistomology differed from His. The Pharisees, Sadduccees, and Herodians may have differed in details (especially with regard to the Afterlife), but their Epistemology was based upon the Law. The Law was the Ultimate Authority. Adherence to the Law was a Way of Life. Academic Debates revolved around the Law, and countless other laws were created in order to keep the Law. Great Scholars argued with one another about the best way of KEEPING the Law down to the minutest detail. An example of this would be the debate between Hillel and Shumai regarding the order of lighting Hanukkah Candles (Hillel won). Even in Israel today, there are those who will throw rocks at somebody breaking the Sabbath. Wouldn't "Throwing Rocks" be a breach of the Sabbath as well?
Now, the Law is Good, and was given by God to His People. It was not, however, an End in and of Itself. To make a "god" out of the Law is just as bad as worshiping an idol. The difference can be illustrated by what happened in Boston last month. A satanic convention tore up a Bible in public. Christians were enraged by this, but they didn't arrest or even attack the perpetrator. After all, we know that the paper, cardboard, glue and ink are not sacred, but the Word of God is. Meanwhile, if the satanists had tried this with a Koran, they could have been jailed or even killed. Muslims hold the book itself to be sacred. It's their Epistemology.
When the Pharisees question Jesus about from Whom He got His Authority, He answers their question with another question. The answer is to Jesus's question is Binary: either one thing or the other. The Pharisees can't answer either way or they will get in trouble with the crowd. And so, they refuse to answer.
Nature itself is Binary, from the Birds and the Bees to Computer Language. That's why Jesus said:
"Let your "YES" mean "YES" and your "NO" mean "NO".
That's an Epistemology that I can live with.

Psalm 110
Of David. A Psalm.
1 The Lord says to my lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.’
2 The Lord sends out from Zion
your mighty sceptre.
Rule in the midst of your foes.
3 Your people will offer themselves willingly
on the day you lead your forces
on the holy mountains.*
From the womb of the morning,
like dew, your youth* will come to you.
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.’*
5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgement among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter heads
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the stream by the path;
therefore he will lift up his head.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!

"Jesus t Teaches in the Temple" James Tissot |
|
| _ | it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by | what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
