Luke 19

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

My Sister and I were really excited. A local woman, Susan Tedeschi,who had "made it" in the music biz was playing at the Orpheum in Boston. We bought our concert tickets with good seats in the orchestra section.

The Orpheum is a very OLD Venue, built before the Civil War, and very small. The seats are narrow and the orchestra section is not "banked" properly. It is where I have seen some amazing performers, including The Allman Brothers, Carlos Santana, Janis Joplin, and Bob Dylan. It is fairly near the Park Street Train Station, but we drove in by car. Parking wasn't too bad in the Boston Common Garage, and it was a beautiful night, so we walked. The Orpheum is at the end of a funky alley, across from the Historic Park Street Church. On this soft summer night, with the city lights twinkling around the Boston Common, this looked like it was going to be a magical evening. We got into our seats in the ancient venue, and enjoyed the Opening Act. I didn't have any trouble seeing the stage in the small venue.

Then Susan came on and launched into a cover of an Allman Brothers Tune. The entire audience rose to their feet and roared their approval. And, just as suddenly, my sister and I became lost in a canyon of standing bodies. All I could see was the was the sweaty T-Shirt of the man standing in front of me. I finally just sat down, because couldn't see the stage whether I stood or sat. I closed my eyes and listened. (She was Amazing, so it was worth it.)

After the concert, we ran into some musician friends in the lobby. They had been seated in the first balcony, where the seats are precariously banked, (sometimes called the "nosebleed section"), and they had a perfect, unobstructed view for the entire concert. Nobody dares to stand up in the Orpheum balcony. It's just too scary!

In the Town of Jericho, Israel, there is a Sycamore Tree planted in the middle of the Village Square. It has a fence around it and a sign that says it is Zacchaeus's Tree. It's old, but probably not as old as the Orpheum in Boston. I really wanted to climb it, but that was not allowed. I had a real place in my heart for Zacchaeus, because I am short too!

But there is more to identification with Zacchaeus that stature. He was a sinner! Zacchaeus was the Chief Tax Collector for the Town. That means that all the other Tax Collectors answered to him. What he lacked in physical stature was made up for with political power and wealth.

Political Power and Wealth did not equal popularity or friendship. It made him even more despised by the people. If being "short" was enough to get him ostracized, being a collaborator with the enemy for the sake of wealth and power certainly would be even worse.

Zacchaeus really wanted to see Jesus, even if it meant throwing away every shred of dignity and climbing a tree like a little kid, in front of all the people who owed him money, or who had been cheated by him. I can't imagine the humiliation and public embarrassment this could have caused.

It was THAT important to him. When Jesus returns, there will be no obstructed views. EVERY Eye will SEE HIM.

By the way, he Tedeschi-Trucks Band is returning to Boston this Summer, but this time they are at the Garden, where the Celtics and Bruins play. It is a brand-new venue, with no obstructed seats, even if everybody stands up. Somebody got the Memo.
