Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 18

The Rich and the Kingdom of God

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a]”

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD Our God
How Excellent is Your Name Over All The Earth!
You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised,
For You Alone Are The One True God Of Abraham!
Holy, Holy , Holy, Are You,
LORD God of Power And Might,
Omnipotent,
Omniscient,
and Omnipresent,
And Yet, You Are "The God Who Sees" even the smallest personal thing in our lives.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Once again, in my search for images for this thread, I came upon an article I wrote four years ago when we were looking at 1 Samuel:

It was to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, to hear the legendary Jazz Bass Player in a small, intimate venue, and write a review of the performance in my college newspaper. I had heard so much about this "National Treasure" of Jazz, one of the Pioneers of BeBop who had played with all the "Greats".

Since it was a tiny venue, and hubby and I got a table right in front, I could have reached out and touched this American Musical Icon as he played.

Well, the concert was TERRIBLE. I was SO disappointed. The Artist plodded through each song, had a scowling expression on his face, took very few half-hearted solos, and gave a very poor performance all around. I was, to say the least, confused as to why this man was so admired, and the next day wrote a scathing review. As you know from these daily posts, I LOVE to write, and can be a little acerbic at times (a little?). Anyway, a week later my review showed up in the newspaper, right across from the man's OBITUARY! He had died from cancer less than a week after his last performance...which is the one I had panned.

I felt so HORRIBLE! How could I not see that the man was DYING up there? I STILL to this day feel the shame of my ignorance and insensitivity, so much so that I won't even tell you the name of the Artist. It just makes me feel SO SAD!

The Story of The Rich Young Ruler appears in all three of the Synoptic Gospels. It is not a parable, but an incident in the Life of Christ. All three narratives are nearly the same, but with a few details that are different. Luke, for example, refers to him as a "Ruler", meaning that he was a person of some power in the community, perhaps like a City Councilman or Alderman. Mark just refers to him as a "Rich Young Man." Most people's reaction to this story is something like this:

"What a Jerk! He chose money and position rather than Jesus! I would NEVER be like THAT!"

But the Gospels record that "Jesus LOVED him". We write our scathing review of the Rich Young Ruler, not knowing the cancer that was eating him up inside.

"What Cancer?" you ask. "The Text doesn't say anything about Cancer!"

Well, in a sense it does. The Rich Young Ruler sincerely believed that he could be justified by the Law, and that mere compliance without a Heart Change was enough to "earn" Eternal Life. His very first question was "What must I DO?

This question is not from ignorance, as he calls Jesus "GOOD TEACHER". He recognizes that Jesus is not an ordinary traveling preacher. Yet, everything that Jesus says is countered by a self-righteous answer. "I've always kept the law. (I'm a good person!)"

Then Jesus asks him to do something he is not willing to do, and he walks away. This gives Jesus an opportunity to teach His disciples about commitment. Peter, ever the boaster, says:

“We have left all we had to follow you!”.

Jesus gives Peter a gentle rebuke, because Peter, too, is being self-righteous. Peter thinks it's about doing something to get saved. It may not be until after the Resurrection that he finds out that it is about Faith, Hope, and Love.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 29

A Psalm of David.

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,*
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy splendour.

3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,*
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, ‘Glory!’

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!
