Luke 17

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[b] met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Before I begin, I must confess that this is not my original story. It was shared with me by Chris, a pastor's wife, nearly forty years ago. I don't know where she got it, or if it was original with her. My apologies if the parable is from a copyrighted source. Anyway, here goes:

Imagine a brutally hot day in the city. The concrete sidewalks are broiling hot. Somebody places a lump of clay and a lump of wax next to teach other on the sidewalk to see what the sun will do to them. The Lump of clay bakes in the sun and becomes adobe, a brittle, hard, brick that will shatter if it is dropped. The clay, on the other hand, became soft and malleable, and was able to be formed into a nice scupture. Both substances were exposed to the same heat, by they reacted differently.

Last weekend, my sister had an outdoor gig at a tavern on the Neponset River in Boston. It was brutally hot, but the patrons were under umbrellas and insisted upon being outdoors for the view of the river and the city beyond. Sis set up in a corner which started out as shade, but the patch of shade got smaller and smaller until the entire concrete deck was exposed to the sun. It was like singing on a skillet! Sis was starting to turn red as her skin started to cook. I rushed over to her and slathered on the sunscreen as she was singing. Then I covered up the mixer with a towel to get it out of the direct sun. A customer requested a song by Bob Marley called "Redemption Song". Sis knew the song and turned it into a whole Bob Marley Medley, and soon the whole place was swaying to the Reggae music, as the sun was going down in a magnificent sunset. Both Sis and I have been performing artists for over 40 years. We know how the business works, and sometimes conditions can be tough. We talked about it afterwards.

"Yeah, the heat was pretty brutal," she said, "But I'm grateful for the gig."

I've always felt that way. Sometimes it's very hard to make a living as a musician. Most musicians have a "Day Job" because making music just doesn't bring in enough if you aren't a "Superstar". I've managed to make music, in one form of another, as my sole job for over 35 years, and for that, I am truly Grateful.

The story of the Ten Lepers is about Gratitude. Gratitude is what makes the wax flexible, and the lack of Gratitude is what makes the clay brittle and fragile. Ten were afflicted with the same affliction, and Ten were healed, but only one was Grateful for his healing.

And that's what made all the difference.
