Some of you are old like me, and remember a TV show called "Laugh-In". A recurring character was Edith Ann, played by Lily Tomlin, who was a petulant child sitting in a huge rocking chair. The Rocking Chair was, evidently, some kind of "Time Out" or punishment for something Edith Ann had done wrong. As she rocked in the chair, pouting, Edith Ann would protest her innocence, usually by saying that she had never been told that a thing was wrong until after she did it.

Many years later, in a Seinfeld episode, George is called into his manager's office to answer for the extreme infraction of having sex in the office with the cleaning lady.

The execrable George feigns innocence with these immortal lines:

"Was that wrong?
Should I not have done that?
Because, if I had known that sort of thing was frowned upon here, I wouldn't have done it."

Of course, everybody watching howled with laughter at the mere thought of George thinking somehow that would work. As a matter of fact, that scene has become a viral meme on the Internet.

The "Edith Ann/ George Costanza Defense" is ancient. When confronted by God for his brother's murder, Cain replies:

"Am I My Brother's Keeper?"

This was millennia before Moses was given The Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai, yet, Murder was Still Murder, even though it had not been codified into Law.

I am walking on thin ice reporting this verse, but I promised at the beginning that I wouldn't leave anything out. There is more elaboration on Divorce and Adultery in the Sermon on the Mount and includes the exception of marital infidelity.(Matthew 5-7). St. Paul also speaks of exceptions in 1 Corinthians 7. The point of the Passage is that Jesus is telling His disciples that He did not come to ABOLISH the Law, but to FULFILL it. Certain things, like Murder, Theft, False Witness, and Adultery are still against God's Law, and against Natural Law as well. Societies that have never read The Ten Commandments still "Frown on that sort of thing."

The Blood of Jesus cleanses us and frees us from the Law of Sin and Death, but it is no excuse to engage in lawless behavior. If anything, it should cause us so much joy and gratitude for God's Indescribable Gift to cherish it and "Go and Sin No More."
