Luke 14

The Parable of the Great Banquet

15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
You Are So Holy,
and Worthy of Praise and Worship,
we are Overwhelmed by Your Glory!
It is You Who Have Made The Earth
and All it Contains,
from the tiniest of Creatures,
to the Greatest of the Mountains,
Forests and Deserts.
It is You Who Command the Motion of the Stars,
The Galaxies,
and the Great Singularities of Time and Space,
And it is You Who Create New Life
in the Secret Place of a Mother's Womb!

Let all that has been Concealed

At the bottom of every formal invitation are the letters "R.S.V.P". These initials are from a French Phrase:

"Répondez s'il vous plaît",

which simply means "Please Respond". Of course, there is more to it than just "responding". The invitation could very well include a card which asks how many people will be in your party, whether or not it is a formal affair, and other particulars. Sometimes there is even a self-addressed stamped envelope to assure a response. The Host needs to know how many people are actually coming, so he can order enough food, have enough seats, and so on. A disaster can occur if people don't tell him how many are coming, or worse yet, say they are coming and don't show up. At the Wedding Feast at Cana, where Jesus, His Mother, and a number of Disciples were guests, the Host ran out of wine. Evidently, the Host had not ordered enough. Perhaps the Host ended up with more guests than he had expected. It was a good thing for him that, among his guests, were Jesus and His Mother. The embarrassment of running out of wine would have stayed with the Host for years to come, and it was averted by a Miracle.

There are many points in Jesus's Parable about the Great Banquet. The Characters in the Story all represent Real People. The Host is God The Father. The Wedding is for His Son, the Messiah. The Invited Guests are the People of Israel, who got an amazing engraved invitation (The Torah and the Prophets), and have had an R.S.V.P. that had been going on for centuries.

But when the actual Feast was announced, there were all kinds of excuses. Although on the surface these look legit, further inspection shows that they weren't. For example, who buys land or oxen without inspecting them first? And, even if it were true, any day would be fine for inspecting the land or the oxen, while this Banquet was already scheduled.

The Host, frustrated by these guests who had already been invited, but weren't showing up, instructed his servants to bring in everybody they could find, including Gentiles, the Homeless, and the Handicapped. This ragged bunch was in for a Delicious Feast. Once they were clothed in a Wedding Garment, which was provided by the Host, (Matthew 22:11), they became valued, beloved family Members.

The Wedding Banquet is also echoed in the Book of Revelation. It is called "The Marriage Supper of the Lamb", and YOU are invited.
