Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 14

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House

14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[a] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” 6 And they had nothing to say.

7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Heavenly Father,
How Awesome You Are!
Your Creation Sings of Your Glory,
And yet it is just that:
Your Artwork,
Your Creation,
The Product of Your Infinite and Profound Imagination.
When we contemplate the Vastness of Your Universe,
The Intricacies of The Genome,
The Beauty of the Rainbow,
The Melody of a Bird's Song,
Or The Miracle of Life,
How can we do anything
but fall down before You in Wonder and Praise!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

The South Shore Music Community is a loosely associated group of musicians who know and care about each other. We often attend each other's performances (unless we have a gig) and hear each other play regularly at "Open Mike Nights" around the area. If one person can't make a gig, he or she posts it on FB, and the date gets filled almost immediately. We often celebrate birthdays together and have been known to rally to the assistance of a friend in need. There are no membership rolls, or even musical styles that are common to all. Sis plays Classic Rock, Americana, and some Country, I play Classic Rock, Tim plays Punk, Georgia (84) does American Songbook, Chad plays Reggae, and a lot of us play Singer-Songwriter stuff. Some are really good, and some are pretty terrible, but we are all friends and look forward to seeing each other every week.

A few weeks ago, a new person showed up. She was a young, attractive, nicely-dressed woman who said she did "Stand-Up". While the Open Mike is mostly about MUSIC, the host gave her a slot. She got up, and immediately launched into the most filthy, unfunny, and offensive tirade which was nearly all about bodily functions. Even the hip crowd was totally offended. There was no laughter, no applause, and after the debacle, our Host asked her to not to come back. This was a classic example of not knowing one's audience, though even I, who have attended Comedy Clubs intown with Bikers, was profoundly offended by this person. Lenny Bruce she ain't.

I was surprised that nobody stopped her, or at least "boooed". But that's just how this particular group of people are. They are accepting and nonjudgmental, even when they know better. (For the record, a few folks, including me, walked out and hung out on the deck until she was done.)

Knowing your audience is crucial, as some big businesses are finding out lately.

This brings us to Today's Reading. Although this appears to be a different dinner party than the one where a woman washed Jesus's feet with her tears, it was similar in purpose. The Pharisees did not invite Jesus to dinner in order to hear what He had to say. This was not "Open Mike Night" at the Pharisee Home, where everyone brought something to the table, sparking stimulating discussion and discovery. In fact, Dr. Luke clearly states that the whole purpose of the dinner party was to try and catch Jesus in some kind of doctrinal error, and thus, have reason to denounce Him. Instead of sitting back and enjoying what could be an edifying evening, the Pharisees were openly hostile to anything Jesus might have to say.

Then Dr. Luke introduces another person in the scene. It is a man suffering from "Abnormal Swelling". The Greek word translates to "Dropsy", which is swelling in the body caused by some underlying disease. This is not a demon, but a medical condition.

Jesus asks the Pharisees up front if it is lawful to heal (doing a good deed!) on the Sabbath, but they are silent. This preempts any criticism they may come up with later. After all, Jesus ASKED them first. Jesus obviously KNEW His audience. The man is healed, and this gives Jesus the credibility and authority to continue teaching. It looks as though the Pharisees have nothing else to say at the dinner party, and some of Jesus's most famous and profound teachings are reported here.

I wonder if anyone invited Him to another dinner party.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Psalm 136

1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
2 O give thanks to the God of gods,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;

4 who alone does great wonders,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
5 who by understanding made the heavens,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
6 who spread out the earth on the waters,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
7 who made the great lights,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
8 the sun to rule over the day,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;

10 who struck Egypt through their firstborn,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
11 and brought Israel out from among them,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
13 who divided the Red Sea* in two,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,*
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
16 who led his people through the wilderness,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
17 who struck down great kings,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
18 and killed famous kings,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
20 and Og, king of Bashan,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
21 and gave their land as a heritage,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
22 a heritage to his servant Israel,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.

23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
24 and rescued us from our foes,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
25 who gives food to all flesh,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.

26 O give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Jesus Reproving the Pharisees"
James Tissot

_

it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

And, behold, there was a certain man be-
fore him which had the dropsy.

And Jesus answering spake unto the law-
yers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

And they could not answer him again to these things.

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
