Luke 11

The Sign of Jonah

29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.

One of my dearest friends lives about 35 miles away as the crow flies. But, because Boston is shaped like a wheel with two beltways, the fastest way is to go North on Route 3 about ten miles, SOUTH on I95 about twenty miles, NORTH on the I495 Beltway for about fifteen miles, and South on Rt. 126 for about five miles. This Route contains the INFAMOUS Braintree Split and a segment of Highway where you are driving on NORTH I93 and South on I95, as well as North on Rt 128, approaching SOUTH on I24 and Southwest on 37. Be careful. If you take a wrong exit, you will find yourself in Downtown Boston, or maybe Quincy. Or The Braintree Mall. The Braintree Split is where it all comes together. From the Air, it looks like an occult symbol from Led Zeppelin's Fourth Album, but somehow, people get to work every day. The signage is fairly clear, except for the one that is saying you are going NORTH and SOUTH at the SAME TIME. The Diagram of the Interchange directing motorists from I24 looks like the symbol for the "Artist Formerly Known As Prince". Ask any resident of Eastern Massachusetts about The Braintree Split, and you will get a shudder.

The Braintree Split would be impossible to navigate without signs. I had gotten so used to it over the years that I almost didn't need the signs anymore, but then, in order to get Highway Funding from the Federal Government, the State changed all the Exit Numbers! Then, funding in hand, they closed off familiar ramps and bridges to do the much needed maintenance and refurbishment. So now, with all the Ramps and Exit Numbers changed, I was once again LOST. Thank goodness all the work is done, the new signs are up, and the detours removed in time for me to visit my friend, a 60-mile Zig Zag Away.

Unlike the Interstate Highway System, the Bible is consistent when it comes to signs. "Three Days" pops up again and again in both the Old Testament and the New. The numbers 6, 7, and 12 also show up frequently. People, even saintly ones, consistently fail, and God consistently bails them out. Crime brings Punishment, Sin brings Retribution, and Repentance brings Forgiveness. When Jesus spoke of "The Sign of Jonah", the Pharisees, who were learned men, knew EXACTLY what He was talking about. Perhaps that is why there was so much animosity between the Pharisees and Jesus. The WERE educated, and should have known better.

(Oh...BTW, the Mall that I spoke of a few days ago, that had the Burka Store across from Victoria's Secret, is AT THE BRAINTREE SPLIT! There's some irony in that, I guess. )
