51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[b]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

How Hallowed,
Magnificent,

From 1991 to 1999, nine straight years, my husband and I attended Rolling Thunder on Memorial Day. This meant riding our motorcycles from Boston to Washington DC, a journey that was allegedly an 11 hour trip. However, road conditions, weather, and traffic always made it more. The first time we made the trip, we were in a club, so we had over twenty "Riding Buddies." and took the shortest route was a straight shot down I95. Since we had never ridden that far before, we naturally took that route.

Things started getting ugly around Providence RI. Construction Detours, Traffic, and Rain all conspired to keep us in New England. But we soldiered onward. As we approached New York City, it got worse, and then we realized that we had to pays tolls to go over The George Washington Bridge, which plunged us into a depressed roadway known as the "Trans Bronx Expressway". This miserable trench in the ground was surrounded by the "Inner City" and was really dangerous and scary, and we had to PAY for the "privilege" of riding on it.

After that came Philadelphia and Baltimore. While there may be nice parts of those cities, I95 goes through the scary part. Please God don't let my bike break down here!

Soon, Hubby and I got wise to I95, and took a different route. We rode the Mass Pike all the way to Sturbridge, picked up Route 84 South, picked up I81, and went through Central Pennsylvania. Although we did go through some cities, most of the journey was through farmland, mountains, and rolling hills. MUCH Nicer! But also Much LONGER.

In Jesus's time, traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem presented a similar problem. The shortest route went right through Samaria. The Samaritans and the Jews hated each other, so this presented a problem. This was complicated by the fact that Jews were REQUIRED to travel to Jerusalem for the Biblical Feast Days. Going through Samaria became so unpleasant and dangerous, that most people took an alternate route which was much longer and involved crossing the Jordan River TWICE (and no Tappan Zee Bridge to make it easier). In Today's reading we see Jesus resolutely taking the Samaria Route (kind of like walking through the South Bronx at Night) and his disciples are appalled. From the other Gospels we can infer that this was for The Feast of Tabernacles, which was one of the mandatory feasts. The other route would have been filled with pilgrims with the same goal, and Jesus would have traveled with hundreds of companions, as if He were in a "club".

To the horror of His disciples, He took the shorter, more dangerous route. Not only that, but the Journey took THREE DAYS. That would be like being stuck on I95 six times the time it takes to get from Boston to DC on a Harley. Ugh.

Naturally, the residents of Samaria gave this little group of Jews, cutting through their territory to get to a Jewish Feast, a really hard time. They were so abusive that the disciples asked Jesus to call down fire from heaven. (Don't think I haven't thought about that for the South Bronx!)

Jesus rebukes them for their vengeful thoughts, and they finally arrive at their destination.

This year is the last year for Rolling Thunder. I suppose our beloved Vietnam Vets are getting a bit old for the intense riding leading up to the event. But, as I understand it, the biggest problem is with the Pentagon Police. The Pentagon has the only parking lot big enough to stage the parade, so I guess it's over. It's a sad time for me.
