Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 9

The Transfiguration

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

Sorry I'm late today. First, I tried to get a little extra sleep this morning, but Tippy wouldn't have it. Then, our walk got a little longer because of tree-work on our regular route. Then, when I booted up the computer, it seemed as though it was stuck on a old page. Finally, as I was setting up the thread, I saw that I had the wrong Scripture Passage, and I had to go back and correct it. But, here we are, at last, with one of the deepest, most amazing events in the Gospels before our eyes. It is impossible to portray it in Art, but Raphael did a decent job. I can't even imagine how Peter, James, and John felt when confronted by this awesome vision.

The symbolism of this encounter is something we can talk about in retrospect, but the three Apostles were so astounded and terrified that they were unable to grasp it at the time. Peter even babbled about building three little tents for the Three Giants of the Faith, totally missing the point of the Vision.

Not that I am any wiser than Peter, James, or John, scholars throughout the centuries have given us a bit of insight into The Transfiguration:

1. Fulfillment of the Law. Moses represents The Law. It was through Moses that God has given us The Ten Commandments, The Torah, and the whole Biblical System of Substitutionary Atonement. The Blood of Jesus fulfills ALL of the Law. The Rituals and Sacrifices of the Old Testament foreshadowed the Death of Jesus on the Cross, as the Atonement for our sins.

2. Fulfillment of Prophecy. The Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem was predicted by the Prophet Micah. His Betrayal by a supposed friend was predicted by David, Zechariah, and Isaiah. David and Isaiah also predicted the agonizing Death of Jesus, and David hinted at His Resurrection. There are hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament that were fulfilled while Jesus was here on Earth, and many more to be fulfilled at His Second Coming. Elijah represents the Prophets.

3. The Lord is My Salvation. Moses was succeeded by Joshua. Joshua was originally names "Hosea" which is a variation of "Hosanna", which means "Save me!". "Joshua", on the other hand, means "God Saves". It's a little variation in pronunciation that changes the whole meaning of the name. When Moses assigned Hosea to spy out the Promised Land with eleven others, he changed Hosea's name to "Joshua". It was at that point that Moses began to train and prepare Joshua to take the reins of leadership after Moses's death. Elijah the Prophet also mentored his successor. This was to be a farmer named Elisha, who ended up being an amazing Miracle-Worker and Prophet in his own ministry. "Elisha" is a variation of "Joshua", and means "God (El) Saves (isha).

We call The Lord "Jesus" because that id a variation in Greek of His Hebrew Name, Yeshua. That is a variation of "Joshua" once again. This is why the Angel Gabriel said in The Annunciation, "You will name Him Jesus for he will save his people from sin."

It all comes together when you look at the whole picture.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Psalm 20

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

1 The Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
The name of the God of Jacob protect you!
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary,
and give you support from Zion.
3 May he remember all your offerings,
and regard with favour your burnt sacrifices.
Selah

4 May he grant you your heart’s desire,
and fulfil all your plans.
5 May we shout for joy over your victory,
and in the name of our God set up our banners.
May the Lord fulfil all your petitions.

6 Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories by his right hand.
7 Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses,
but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.
8 They will collapse and fall,
but we shall rise and stand upright.

9 Give victory to the king, O Lord;
answer us when we call.*
