Luke 8

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man

26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

Napoleon is reputed to have said, "An Army Travels on its Stomach." He learned this the hard way in his Retreat from Moscow. Starvation and the Russian Winter decimated his army. Hitler got the same lesson a little over a century later. It doesn't matter how much equipment and ordinance your army may have, or how advanced their weaponry may be, if they have nothing to eat.

This could explain the huge herd of pigs that was quartered in the Northern Galilee region. The area was occupied by a huge contingent of Roman Soldiers, The Tenth Legion.

The Tenth Legion had an amazing history, having been present during the Roman Civil War, at the Battle of Actium, and, later, would be the "heavies" during the Siege of Masada. After the destruction of the Temple, they would be stationed in Jerusalem until the late 3rd century. The Tenth Legion is a very important part of Biblical History.

A Roman Legion during the days of the Empire consisted of of over 5500 men, including Infantry and Cavalry. And these Men had to be FED. Cattle and Sheep both need to move around as the herds graze and exhaust the land, but pigs stay put and eat whatever you give them. That could explain the massive herd of pigs that were rooting around this little town on the Galilee.

Ironically, a mascot of the Tenth Legion was a Boar, which was emblazoned on one of their flags. The poor, beleaguered town seemed to be the home of a Roman Legion, a massive herd of pigs, crazy naked men who ran around the tombs screaming, and a Legion of Demons. It was, as we would say, a BAD NEIGHBORHOOD.

By delivering the demoniac, Jesus was overtly saying that He would deliver us from Spiritual Oppression. By casting the demons into the pigs, He was covertly saying that He would also free us from Temporal Oppression, that is, the oppression brought on by living in this world, with its corruption, filth, evil government, and the temptations of the flesh that beset us. Like many other Bible Stories, there is more to this than meets the eye. Maybe that's why all three of the Synoptic Gospels contain this story. It is as if God is saying, "I've told you this three times. Now LISTEN UP!"
