Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 7
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Everlasting Father,
How Glorious and Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise,
For You Alone Are The One True God,
Almighty and Eternal,
Glorious and Transcendent,
Rock of Ages,
Ancient of Days,
King of Kings,
and Lord of Lords!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Sorry I am a bit late today, but Tippy and I found a new trail that bypasses a half-mile of unpleasant highway. It is a wooded area that crosses a stream, and ends up in a neighborhood that I am familiar with. The only snag is that the last few feet of the trail has to cross PRIVATE PROPERTY. I am very respectful of Private Property, and would be upset if somebody crossed my own yard without permission, but I could see the connecting street from where I stood. Grrrr...what to do? I could turn back and go the half mile back through the woods, crossing the stream again on a strategically placed plank (a tightrope performance with Tippy on a leash), or I could quickly skirt the edge of the property and hope nobody would see me. I chose the latter. It took less than a minute, and I was on a public street again, but I felt bad about it. There had been a fork in the trail that had led to this spot. I calculated that the other fork (the one that led to the right) would have taken me out of the woods right into the street without hitting private property. The stream there, though, is harder to get across. Tomorrow I will go to the right instead of the left. I shoulda KNOWN Better!
If I had been caught, I could have always just told the truth:
"I'm a poor, elderly widow, just out walking my dog and I got LOST."
I can leave out the part about riding a Harley and playing Rock Bass Guitar. Even so, being a widow on Social Security, a senior citizen with no children, is not fun. I am blessed that I have my health, and wonderful friends and family, but sometimes it can get lonely. I have to watch my spending, but I'm not really "poor"...well, maybe in a community of million dollar homes I am...relatively speaking.
It was a lot worse in Jesus's day. There were no Government Programs, Widow's Pensions, or Senior Housing in those days. A widow HAD to rely upon her children to stay alive. The widow whose son had just died was looking at bleak and dire circumstances ahead.
And then this man walks up to her and says "Don't Cry." Well, what was she supposed to do? If she wasn't in enough distress already, here's someone telling her NOT to cry?
But then, Jesus does the unthinkable. He RAISES the widow's son from the dead. The only way Jesus had the authority to tell the woman not to cry was that He was about to perform this Miracle for her.
This is the first of three times Jesus performs this Miracle. The second one is the raising of Jairus's daughter, and the third is the raising of Lazarus.
In the Gospel of John, which tells the story of Lazarus, there appears the shortest verse in the Bible:
"Jesus Wept."
There was nobody who could possibly tell Jesus NOT to cry, as He was the one about to perform the Miracle, and was the only one who had any say in the matter.
Unless I have the SOLUTION to a person's problem, I have no right to tell them how to grieve. Grief and Mourning are very personal, and I have to be very careful about saying "Don't Cry" if I can't offer resolution. All I can do is offer comfort and prayers.
My Epistle reading today was in 1 Corinthians 15, which is all about the Resurrection of the Body. It went perfectly with Today's Reading.
Coincidence? I think not.

Psalm 16
A Miktam of David.
1 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.’*
3 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
in whom is all my delight.
4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;*
their drink-offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.
