Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 6

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

6 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Since I am always trying to dig deeper into Scripture, I sometimes find some very useful sermons and teachings online. My daily image search often yields some very useful links. Unfortunately, since anyone with an Internet Account can post anything they want, I have also run into some crackpots. Usually one can tell a nutcase from the first few sentences.

That was not the case yesterday. I was well into 35 minutes on a video about the Book of Revelation. Up until that point, the soft-spoken, conservatively-dressed preacher was presenting a very reasonable and erudite message explaining the symbolism and relevance to Today in that difficult book. I was enjoying his approach and agreeing with most of his conclusions. Then he got to "The Mark of the Beast".

First, he spent some time exploring what he felt the "Mark of the Beast" is NOT. Implants, Bar Codes, Social Security Numbers, Nano-Particles were all rejected as candidates for the infamous 666.

THEN, he confidently stated that "The Mark of the Beast" was "worshiping the Lord on SUNDAY instead of Saturday". He backed this all up, not with Scripture, but with dubious theories about Constantine and the Holy Roman Empire. I turned it off. I was going to share this yesterday, but I waiting until today because I saw ahead what Today's Reading was going to be.

Whether a group gathers on Saturday or Sunday to worship the LORD, it would seem extreme to me to assert that the "other" group was accepting "The Mark of The Beast" by their choice in the matter. Both Jesus and Paul addressed this. First, Jesus did by healing on the Sabbath. His conclusion was that it is always permissible to "Do Good" on the special day God has set aside as a day of rest and reflection. Paul says, in Romans 14:

5. One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7. For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

10. You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. (Romans 14 NIV)

Throughout History, the Calendar itself has changed many times. The Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas and Easter on different days than the Latin Church. Some denominations don't celebrate these two Holy Days at all because of the many pagan customs that have crept into our culture. Some churches worship on Saturday, some on Sunday. Wednesday, for some reason, has become a "holy day" in many churches for Mid-Week Bible Studies. Some Churches have designated Fast Days, and others celebrate the Feasts of Israel mandated in the Torah.

Neither Jesus nor Paul condemned anyone for these differences. And yet, there are preachers online saying that Sunday Worship is "The Mark of the Beast."

We are all going to have to answer for what we say about God, especially those of us who call ourselves "Teachers". That is why I approach this subject with great humility and caution. The important thing is NOT to be a "pharisee" about it.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Good points! And you illustrated an example of legalism about the Sabbath.

But believers have the rest of redemption, all days of the week.

Joining in prayer, this National Day of Prayer, for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

Psalm 145

Praise. Of David.

1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you,
and praise your name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable.

4 One generation shall laud your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

8 The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.

10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and tell of your power,
12 to make known to all people your* mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendour of your* kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

The Lord is faithful in all his words,
and gracious in all his deeds.*
14 The Lord upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand,
satisfying the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry, and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.
