Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 2

Jesus Presented in the Temple

22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c]

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29  “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,

    you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.

30  For my eyes have seen your salvation,

31      which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:

32  a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

    and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” 36 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e] She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name!
How Glorious,
How Hallowed,
and How Wonderful!
You Alone Are Worthy Of Praise
For You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are Worthy,
And You Alone Are The One True God.

We Thank You For Your Holy Word,
Even When it Doesn't Seem to fit in with our finite way of thinking,
even if it "rubs us the wrong way",
even if it "doesn't seen fair".
For Your Ways are so above our ways, who can fathom it?

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Anyone who has been reading this Thread for a while has read stories about how God has provided for me in miraculous ways. There was the time when a long lost insurance check surfaced from Florida just when I needed roof repairs, the time when I got a refund three years after a bad dentistry incident, and the time I was able to discharge a huge debt with the change I had been saving under the kitchen sink. In all of these incidents, the exact amount I needed in emergency funds appeared in the most unlikely ways.

It didn't surprise me that, as I was walking Tippy this morning, I saw Fifty Dollar Bill lying on the rain-soaked sidewalk. I picked up the bill, and right away, from the feel of it, knew it was fake. OK...it was an advertising gimmick. I get it. But it was still very disappointing. I had really thought it had been God providing for what had been a lean week (school vacation), and I really could have used the Fifty Dollars. He works in mysterious ways.

Imagine my horror when I saw that it was NOT an advertising gimmick for a new car, or a mortgage company, or any other commercial enterprise. It was a GOSPEL TRACT. I became indignant. Who would use "Bait and Switch" to preach the Gospel? Jesus never used deceptive methods to give His Message. He instructed the Disciples as well, "Let your 'Yes" mean 'Yes' and your 'No' mean 'No'." My disappointment turned into anger. My anger was not at God, but at well-meaning but insensitive people who think that this is a fine way to spread the Good News. Deception is never a good way. Sorry, brothers, that tract is an EPIC FAIL. To "promise" a widowed senior citizen a little financial assistance and then preach at her instead is not very Christian.

In Today's Reading, we see two elderly people who are trusting in a Promise. It is God's Promise and it WILL be fulfilled. Simeon believed in the Promise that he would not die before seeing the Messiah. Instantly, upon seeing the Baby Jesus presented in the Temple (as per the Law of Moses), Simeon KNEW it was He Whom the people had been waiting for. He says in a prayer that he can now depart in peace, knowing that He has seen the Messiah face-to-face.

Anna, an elderly widow, has also been believing God for His Promise. She had been widowed at a young age, and had spent the intervening years in the Temple, waiting for the fulfillment of The Promise. She too, was not disappointed.

Dr. Luke shows his compassion and concern for the Elderly, the Lonely, and the Poor, as he shares this story, which is not found in any of the other Gospels. No wonder I like him so much. I wish he were my doctor! (I wonder if he takes Medicare LOL)

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Psalm 105

1 O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name,
make known his deeds among the peoples.
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wonderful works.
3 Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually.
5 Remember the wonderful works he has done,
his miracles, and the judgements he has uttered,
6 O offspring of his servant Abraham,*
children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

7 He is the Lord our God;
his judgements are in all the earth.
8 He is mindful of his covenant for ever,
of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
9 the covenant that he made with Abraham,
his sworn promise to Isaac,
10 which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan
as your portion for an inheritance.’

12 When they were few in number,
of little account, and strangers in it,
13 wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people,
14 he allowed no one to oppress them;
he rebuked kings on their account,
15 saying, ‘Do not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets no harm.’

16 When he summoned famine against the land,
and broke every staff of bread,
17 he had sent a man ahead of them,
Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18 His feet were hurt with fetters,
his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19 until what he had said came to pass,
the word of the Lord kept testing him.
20 The king sent and released him;
the ruler of the peoples set him free.
21 He made him lord of his house,
and ruler of all his possessions,
22 to instruct* his officials at his pleasure,
and to teach his elders wisdom.

23 Then Israel came to Egypt;
Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.
24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful,
and made them stronger than their foes,
25 whose hearts he then turned to hate his people,
to deal craftily with his servants.

26 He sent his servant Moses,
and Aaron whom he had chosen.
27 They performed his signs among them,
and miracles in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness, and made the land dark;
they rebelled* against his words.
29 He turned their waters into blood,
and caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with frogs,
even in the chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
and gnats throughout their country.
32 He gave them hail for rain,
and lightning that flashed through their land.
33 He struck their vines and fig trees,
and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the locusts came,
and young locusts without number;
35 they devoured all the vegetation in their land,
and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He struck down all the firstborn in their land,
the first issue of all their strength.

37 Then he brought Israel* out with silver and gold,
and there was no one among their tribes who stumbled.
38 Egypt was glad when they departed,
for dread of them had fallen upon it.
39 He spread a cloud for a covering,
and fire to give light by night.
40 They asked, and he brought quails,
and gave them food from heaven in abundance.
41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
it flowed through the desert like a river.
42 For he remembered his holy promise,
and Abraham, his servant.

43 So he brought his people out with joy,
his chosen ones with singing.
44 He gave them the lands of the nations,
and they took possession of the wealth of the peoples,
45 that they might keep his statutes
and observe his laws.
Praise the Lord!

Amen.

Because of Your promise and as Your own heart dictates, You have done all these astounding things to make Your servant know and understand. Therefore You are great, O Lord God; for none is like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all [You have made] our ears to hear. What [other] one nation on earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be a people for Himself and to make for Himself a name? You have done great and terrible things for Yourself and for Your land, before Your people, whom You redeemed and delivered for Yourself from Egypt, from the nations and their gods. And You have established for Yourself Your people Israel to be Your people forever, and You, Lord, became their God. Now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word You have given as to Your servant and his house; and do as You have said, And Your name [and presence] shall be magnified forever, saying, The Lord of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of Your servant David will be made firm before You.”
‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭7‬:‭21‬-‭26‬ ‭AMPC‬‬
