Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 1

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

My beloved Pastor Jerry (RIP), loved his Smart Phone. It was Voice Activated, and he used it to fact-check outrageous claims. This was a good tool to have in Biker Church, because (bless their hearts!), Bikers are famous for telling tall tales and spinning yarns about life on the road. Also, most Male Bikers are Type A Personalities, and love to tell stories in which THEY are the hero. Pastor Jerry's Fact-Checking put quite a few people "in their place". Of Course, Pastor Jerry was himself a Type-A Alpha Male Biker who had a lot of Adventures. Since I only had an old-lady style flip phone, there was no way I could check up on his stories, but, assuming he was a Man of God, I had faith that he was telling the Truth. Besides, I have had some weird Adventures and have experienced miracles myself, and there is no way to Fact-Check my stories. You'll just have to believe me.

The Same Angel, Gabriel, was sent to both Zachariah and Mary. Both Announcements were about Miraculous Births that were about to take place. Mary was a virgin, and was engaged to be married, but the ceremony would probably be a year in the future. Meanwhile, Zachariah and Elizabeth had been married for years, and were well past the age of parenting. Both Zachariah and Mary had reason to doubt the Angel's Message, and both questioned the Announcement. Why was Zachariah punished and not Mary?

There's a big difference between:

"How will this happen?"

and:

“How can I be sure of this?"

It is the difference between Faith and Doubt.

Both Mary and Zachariah knew the basic Science behind Pregnancy and Childbirth. Neither needed a degree in Biology to know that Men were Men, Women were Women, and neither a virgin nor a postmenopausal woman could become pregnant. (at least in THOSE Days!). Both knew that such a Birth would have to be a Sovereign Miracle of God.

Mary believed it was GOING to happen, and just wanted to know HOW God was going to go about it.

Zachariah, on the other hand, challenged Gabriel as to the veracity of the Announcement, which, by Luke's Narrative, Gabriel seemed to take personally. After all, Gabriel stood in the Presence of Almighty God, and was given this exciting mission to make these announcements.

Of COURSE what the Angel was saying was Impossible. That's why they're called MIRACLES.

Dr. Luke probably knew more about Pregnancy and Childbirth than all the other People in this Story. And yet, he gives us a narrative that is detailed, compassionate, knowledgeable, and truthful. he has no problem believing in the Miraculous, even though he is a Man of Science as well as a Man of God.
