Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Luke 1

Introduction

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh God, Father Almighty,
Holy and Sanctified is Your Most Wonderful Name!
We come before You on this Beautiful Morning to sing
Psalms of Praise and Thanksgiving!
We Thank You Profoundly that You,
in You Mighty Wisdom and Provision,
have Chosen To Preserve Your Holy Word to This Day.
LORD, We Pray that the Schemes and Plots of the wicked
will be thwarted and dashed asunder.
We Pray an End to the LIES
and the Propaganda
and the Slander against Your People.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

When Anthropologists dig up some old bones, and identify them as a specific type of Ancient Human, they often name the bones after the area in which they were found. There was Piltdown Man (Proven to be a Hoax), Peking Man (lost forever in WW2), and Brendon Fraser's hilariousEncino Man.

An interesting expression we have in our culture is "Renaissance Man". Otherwise known as a "Polymath", the "Renaissance Man" is somebody who excels in many of the Arts and Sciences, and could make a career out of any one of them. The quintessential Renaissance man is Leonardo Da Vinci, who excelled in Painting, Architecture, Hydrodynamics, Engineering, and Writing. However, despite his genius, Leonardo had a tendency to lose sight of his goals, and left many of his projects unfinished. Even his exquisite Mona Lisa, which started out as a simple portrait commission, ended up being schlepped around Europe for years as Leonardo "touched it up". The merchant who commissioned the portrait never got it. One wonders if he paid the Artist in advance. While we have reams of notebooks from the Great Master, few of his inventions were actually constructed and none exist today. So, maybe being a "Renaissance Man" is not all that it's cracked up to be. Still...who am I to analyze Leonardo?

Today we begin reading the Gospel of St. Luke.

According to both Scripture and Tradition, Luke was a type of "Renaissance Man" of his time. He was a Physician, a Writer of distinction (He wrote both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts, two of the most "readable" and lively books in the Bible), an Artist in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition, and a very Educated Man, as shown by his erudite usage of the Greek Language. His style is closer to Classical Greek, and he makes both conscious and oblique references to the Classical Greek Authors of Ancient Times. His Gospel and the Book of Acts both begin with an address of introduction (which is typical of the Classics), and are addressed to the same person, Theophilus. While that name means "Lover of God" and could mean all of us, the way it is worded indicates that Theophilus was a real person.

Luke pays special attention to the people in his narrative. He has compassionate descriptions of Women, Children, and Poor People, and speaks with authority on such issues as pregnancy, childbirth, and other "medical" issues.

According to Paul, Luke was a faithful friend and traveling companion, and ministered to Paul's medical needs during his arduous journeys.

Luke was truly the Original "Renaissance Man".

The word "Renaissance" means "Rebirth", as it described the rediscovery of the Classical Arts in Europe towards the end of the Medieval period. The result of the discovery of ancient artifacts caused a "rebirth" of the Arts in Europe, spearheaded by genius Renaissance Men like Leonardo and Michelangelo.

Jesus said that we need to experience a "rebirth" as well. (John 3:3) Mine happened on October 18th, 1981. Oddly enough, that day is also St. Luke's Feast Day. I think I'll start calling it "Renaissance Day"!

God Bless America.

Psalm 76

To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

1 In Judah God is known,
his name is great in Israel.
2 His abode has been established in Salem,
his dwelling-place in Zion.
3 There he broke the flashing arrows,
the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war.
Selah

4 Glorious are you, more majestic
than the everlasting mountains.*
5 The stout-hearted were stripped of their spoil;
they sank into sleep;
none of the troops
was able to lift a hand.
6 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
both rider and horse lay stunned.

7 But you indeed are awesome!
Who can stand before you
when once your anger is roused?
8 From the heavens you uttered judgement;
the earth feared and was still
9 when God rose up to establish judgement,
to save all the oppressed of the earth.
Selah

10 Human wrath serves only to praise you,
when you bind the last bit of your* wrath around you.
11 Make vows to the Lord your God, and perform them;
let all who are around him bring gifts
to the one who is awesome,
12 who cuts off the spirit of princes,
who inspires fear in the kings of the earth.
