Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 16

Jesus Has Risen

16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.[a]

[The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.]

9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.

12 Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. 13 These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.

14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

Footnotes

a Mark 16:8 Some manuscripts have the following ending between verses 8 and 9, and one manuscript has it after verse 8 (omitting verses 9-20): Then they quickly reported all these instructions to those around Peter. After this, Jesus himself also sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.

Psalm 107

1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
those he redeemed from trouble
3 and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.*

4 Some wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way to an inhabited town;
5 hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress;
7 he led them by a straight way,
until they reached an inhabited town.
8 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
9 For he satisfies the thirsty,
and the hungry he fills with good things.

10 Some sat in darkness and in gloom,
prisoners in misery and in irons,
11 for they had rebelled against the words of God,
and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 Their hearts were bowed down with hard labour;
they fell down, with no one to help.
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress;
14 he brought them out of darkness and gloom,
and broke their bonds asunder.
15 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
16 For he shatters the doors of bronze,
and cuts in two the bars of iron.

17 Some were sick* through their sinful ways,
and because of their iniquities endured affliction;
18 they loathed any kind of food,
and they drew near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress;
20 he sent out his word and healed them,
and delivered them from destruction.
21 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
22 And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices,
and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.

23 Some went down to the sea in ships,
doing business on the mighty waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths;
their courage melted away in their calamity;
27 they reeled and staggered like drunkards,
and were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out from their distress;
29 he made the storm be still,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they had quiet,
and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33 He turns rivers into a desert,
springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 a fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.
35 He turns a desert into pools of water,
a parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry live,
and they establish a town to live in;
37 they sow fields, and plant vineyards,
and get a fruitful yield.
38 By his blessing they multiply greatly,
and he does not let their cattle decrease.

39 When they are diminished and brought low
through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,
40 he pours contempt on princes
and makes them wander in trackless wastes;
41 but he raises up the needy out of distress,
and makes their families like flocks.
42 The upright see it and are glad;
and all wickedness stops its mouth.
43 Let those who are wise give heed to these things,
and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Three Little Stories About Signs:

1. The Library Signs My first paid commission was lettering the signs for the bookcases in the Public Library in South Boston. In the days before computers and printers, Sign-Painting was a popular profession. I laid out the strips of cardboard, calculated the number of letters in each sign, determined the center, plotted out the lines for the spacing of the letters, and painstakingly painted the signs by hand. When they were finished, they looked terrific, but the Head Librarian noticed that some were misspelled. There were no letters added, but quite a few left out. I had been so intent upon the spacing and the actual letters that I lost sight of the words.

2. The Bookstore Years later, I worked in store that sold Bibles, Church Supplies, and Christian Books. The boss asked me if I could make signs for the bookcases. He wanted them to be in a Unical font, because it looked "holy".

I had never painted a sign in "Unicals" before, so it was a challenge. Carefully I measured out the signs, determined the spacing, and marked out the places for the letters. Luckily, I now had broad tipped Permanent Markers instead of paint to make the signs. They came out great, but, once again, there were some misspellings, and I had to do those particular signs over again. Just like the Library signs, the mistakes were errors of omission, rather than added letters.

3 The Calligrapher My Friend Anita had taken up Calligraphy, which is a fine art in and of itself. She asked me what I would like for her to write out for a decorative plaque for my wall. I said, "The Lord's Prayer, from Matthew, in the King James Version." and she got to work. She carefully plotted out the Prayer on beautiful parchment, penciling in barely visible lines which would be erased later. Then she plotted out each line, centering one line after another, in the most beautiful penmanship I had ever seen. Then she mounted and framed it, and presented it to me for my Birthday.

It had hung on my wall for a number of years, until one day I actually read it. It was missing an entire line (Give us This Day Our Daily Bread)! Oh my goodness! There was no way to fix it, and I'll bet Anita had never noticed it as she painstakingly plotted out each individual letter of the Artwork. Once again, it was an error of omission. Anita would never had made up a new line for the Lord's Prayer, but it was entirely possible, in the minute details of calligraphy, to leave something out.

That brings us to Today's Reading in Mark. Many scholars reject Verses 9-20, saying that "The Earliest and most Reliable Manuscripts do not Contain these Verses". But remember how the Copies of the Gospels were produced. Scribes who were religious people (mostly in Monasteries) labored by candlelight copying the Originals by Hand. Hour after hour they worked writing the letters (probably in Unicals!) by hand. Sometimes there were marginal notes, but mostly these Scribes stuck to the Script. Theirs was a Sacred Trust. As a result, we have more copies of the Gospels today than any other Ancient Manuscript. I can imagine a tired Scribe leaving something OUT, but not so much inventing a whole narrative out of his imagination. He would get into big trouble for doing something like that. Anyway, that is just my very humble opinion. I don't claim to be a Textual Critic!

The part that Scholars debate contains Jesus's instructions to His disciples. We call this "The Great Commission".

Far be it from me to replace The Great Commission with "The Great Omission".

And so, in our reading of the Conclusion of Mark's Gospel, I will let it Stand.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.
