Mark 15

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

Three of my friends belong to a very excellent choral group, which will be performing Mozart's Requiem next month. I have my tickets, and am looking forward to it.

I am listening to Bach's St. John's Passion as I type this. Bach wrote an even longer Cantata based upon the Gospel of St. Matthew. I love them both. In St. Matthew's Passion, there is a reoccurring theme that was recognized by the Congregation as and old hymn Oh Sacred Head, Now Wounded. In the midst of a Cantata, which we now consider a "Performance", the congregation would start singing along. It is not customary for the audience to join in and sing along with Mozart's Requiem, so I will have to hold my tongue.

While Bach set the Passion of both John and Matthew to music, and the show Godspell is loosely based on the Gospel of Matthew, and Jesus Christ, Superstar draws its libretto mostly from The Gospel of Luke. Mark seems to have been left out.

Some may argue that Mark's Account is too "cut and dried" to set to music. Yet, as we read the account of the Roman Soldiers mocking Jesus, spitting on Him, pushing a Crown of Thorns on His Head, and putting a fake royal robe on Him to further humiliate Him, our hearts are broken. Perhaps it is the bald brevity in Mark's Matter-Of-Fact Style that reaches us the most.
