Mark 15
Jesus Before Pilate
15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2 “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.
14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Eternal Father,
Strong To Save,
Slow To Anger,
and Infinitely Merciful and Just,
Holy and Sanctified
is Your Most Hallowed and Wonderful Name!
How Marvelous Are Your Works,
That the Very Heavens Declare Your Glory,
Without Embarrassment,
they Just Burst Forth in Sumptuous,
Overwhelming Praise.
The Stars, The Rocks, The Waterfalls,
Even The Lowly Grasses of The Field,
Burst Forth into Riotous Colors,
In Worship of Their Awesome Creator.
And yet we,
The Crown of Your Creation,
That which You Made in Your Image,
That in Whom You Breathed Your Spirit,
Those in Whom You Share Your Creative Genius,
unlike ANY OTHER CREATURE of Your Wonderful Works,
Continue to rebel against You,
And sin against You and against Our Fellow Man.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Two (Fictional) French Missionaries were asked where they would like to be stationed. Both chose Tropical Islands, where the weather was lovely and the natives in dire need of the Gospel. Both Islands spoke French, so there would be no language barrier. One chose Haiti. The other chose Tahiti. When asked if the Tahiti choice was a little self-serving, the Missionary replied, "Well, SOMEBODY'S got to go there. It might as well be ME. The Missionary was technically correct, but still...
Avi, our Tour Guide told this joke (to a busload of Old-School Pentecostal Preachers YIKES!)
"Why is it against the law to make love in public in Israel?"
The preachers on the bus murmured among themselves to find a Biblical answer to the question The Avi declared:
"Because 150 People will come up to you and tell you that you are doing it wrong."
His point was, of course, that there are so many factions and political parties in Israel that they can never reach a consensus.
It was not a "Promotion" to be appointed Procurator in the Middle East. If anything, it could be construed as an appointment akin to banishment, being "kicked to the curb", or being stationed in Outer Mongolia. The "Natives Were Restless" as the saying goes. Not only were the Jews Monotheistic, they would even allow the Roman "gods" anywhere near their Holy Temple. This was awkward because the Romans had elevated their Emperor to godhood, so loyalty to the State was equated with worship of Caesar. Not only that, but the people were passionate about their Freedom and their Holy City, and had a whole Book about it. They celebrated their Deliverance from Slavery every single year, and had been doing it for generations. They had a hierarchy of Priests and Levites who ruled over the people, but even they were divided into political parties. They were expecting a messiah to come and wipe out the Romans. And, to top things off, there were Zealot guerrillas in the hills, making all kinds of trouble. Why couldn't these people just relax and enjoy the Peace, Prosperity, and Largess of the Roman Empire?
During the Yearly Celebration of their "Freedom Holiday", Pilate finds himself faced with a dilemma. Here is a Man who has not broken the Law in any way. Sitting in prison is another man who did indeed break the law, an insurrectionist and a murderer. And yet, the People were calling for the release of the murderer and the crucifixion of the Innocent Man. Pilate has a choice between appeasing the mob or standing for Justice. He has the Power and Authority to do either.
We know what choice he made.

Psalm 90
A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling-place*
in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3 You turn us* back to dust,
and say, ‘Turn back, you mortals.’
4 For a thousand years in your sight
are like yesterday when it is past,
or like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep them away; they are like a dream,
like grass that is renewed in the morning;
6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it fades and withers.
7 For we are consumed by your anger;
by your wrath we are overwhelmed.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your countenance.
9 For all our days pass away under your wrath;
our years come to an end* like a sigh.
10 The days of our life are seventy years,
or perhaps eighty, if we are strong;
even then their span* is only toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger?
Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due to you.
12 So teach us to count our days
that we may gain a wise heart.
13 Turn, O Lord! How long?
Have compassion on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your work be manifest to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us,
and prosper for us the work of our hands—
O prosper the work of our hands!
