Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 14

Jesus Arrested

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father
Who Art in Heaven,
Holy and Sanctified is Your Most Wonderful Name!
We Come into your Presence,
Overcome With Awe,
For You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Worship.
You Alone Are the One True God.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

For those of you who prayed for Jamie, and his hand injured in an industrial accident, I want to let you know that He played guitar at an Open Mike last night. He had the whole band with him and they did three songs. The Concert was a Benefit for my Sister, whose husband had been recently admitted to a nursing home due to Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease. My sister's son drove the 45 miles to the nursing home, signed my B-I-L out for the Concert, and returned with him (another 45 miles and then back again). We had a huge raffle and made enough money to pay my sister's rent for the next month or so as well as a lot of back bills, and EVERYBODY showed up. There were even some of my students there (with their Dad, of course, since it was at a nightclub) and we had a WONDERFUL time. My sister is overwhelmed by the love and support that came from the Music Community here.

Even with a hand that was virtually CRUSHED a few months ago, Jamie still played guitar better than anybody.

What the enemy had stolen from him and my family is being restored by God.

Thank you for your prayers.

Today we read about the Arrest of Jesus in Gethsemane. Led by Judas,the crowd consisted of Temple Guards, Roman Soldiers, and some unruly people who went along just to be part of the mob. They carried clubs and other weapons. In John's Gospel, we will learn that the mere Power of Jesus's Presence was enough to make them fall backwards, and, with a single thought He could have wiped them all out in an instant. But He didn't do that. Meanwhile, Peter, ever impulsive, pulls out a sword and lops off the ear of Malchus, a servant. Jesus rebukes Peter, and heals Malchus on the spot.

All of this drama was being watched by a youth who must have been hiding in the bushes. While the Gospel doesn't name him, Mark is the only one who mentions this detail. It could be Mark's way of revealing that he was there, and, like the disciples, also ran away. But by being there, he was an eyewitness.

The youth must have been a person of means, because he had been wearing a linen garment. Most people wore garments of wool, because linen was expensive, and took longer to process. The Priests were mandated to wear linen garments by the Torah, so linen also had a spiritual factor. In any case, this expensive, spiritually significant item of clothing was left behind in the garden.

When a person comes to Christ, he has to leave all his "cover-ups" behind. Even an expensive linen garment is ineffectual, like the fig leaves Adam and Eve hastily sewed together to cover themselves. No matter one's station in life, it is the same for all. As Bob Dylan sang:

Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed

[Chorus]
But you're going to have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're going to have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're going to have to serve somebody. (from "Gotta Serve Somebody" Bob Dylan c1979)

Psalm 22

To the leader: according to The Deer of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
and by night, but find no rest.

3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our ancestors trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried, and were saved;
in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.

6 But I am a worm, and not human;
scorned by others, and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock at me;
they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;
8 ‘Commit your cause to the Lord; let him deliver—
let him rescue the one in whom he delights!’

9 Yet it was you who took me from the womb;
you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.
10 On you I was cast from my birth,
and since my mother bore me you have been my God.
11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls encircle me,
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;
15 my mouth* is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For dogs are all around me;
a company of evildoers encircles me.
My hands and feet have shrivelled;*
17 I can count all my bones.
They stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But you, O Lord, do not be far away!
O my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my life* from the power of the dog!
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!

From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued* me.
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;*
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;
stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he did not despise or abhor
the affliction of the afflicted;
he did not hide his face from me,*
but heard when I* cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will pay before those who fear him.
26 The poor* shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord.
May your hearts live for ever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord;
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before him.*
28 For dominion belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.

29 To him,* indeed, shall all who sleep in* the earth bow down;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
and I shall live for him.*
30 Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord,
31 and* proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
saying that he has done it.
