Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 14

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

14 Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

Irish people, at least in America, used to always name the first-born daughter "Mary", obviously in honor of the Mother of Jesus. To tell all these "Marys" apart, a second name was added. Entire generations of "Marys" went by that second name, so Mary Elizabeth was called "Liz", Mary Margaret was "Maggie", and Mary Louise became "Mary-Lou". My had an Aunt Mary, my Nana was "Mary Elizabeth" and my other grandmother was "Mary Teresa". Everybody else in school seemed to have an "Aunt Mary", and my Aunt Mary was very special to me.

In the Book of Ruth, Naomi (which means "cheerful") bitterly changes her name to "Mara" because she has seen so much loss and sorrow in her life. "Mara" means "bitter", and is the root word of the name "Mary". Hence, my name "Mary Louise" means "Bitter Warrior". Funny thing is, I'm usually pretty cheerful, and not much of a warrior, except in prayer, I guess.

In my search for Artwork to go with Today's Thread, I came across a lot of pictures showing a different incident than that spoken of in Mark 14. In most of the Artwork, a woman is shown washing Jesus' feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. While this was a very dramatic event, invoking much inspiration for painters, it is NOT the event described in Today's Reading. Let's look at the differences before we look at the similarities.

1. Two Different Locations: In the earlier incident, Jesus was a dinner guest in the home of a Pharisee. This was probably and adversarial environment. Perhaps the Pharisee had invited Jesus to dinner to test Him or "check Him out".

In the other incident, Jesus was with His disciples in the home of Simon The Leper. It is possible that Simon had been cured by Jesus, otherwise he would not be having guests in his home. This looks as though it was a friendly environment.

2. Two Different Women: Scripture doesn't name either of the two women, but tradition has it that the woman who washed Jesus feet with her hair was Mary Magdalene. All we know from Scripture is that she was a "sinner", but, in he eyes of a Pharisee that could mean anyone. Tradition also supposes that the woman who annointed Jesus' HEAD was "Mary of Bethany". That would distinguish her from the other Mary, who was from Magdala.

3. Two Different Responses: In the first incident the negative response is from the Pharisees. They attack both Jesus and the Woman by saying, "If he knew what kind of a woman she is, he wouldn't let her touch him!" They, of course, considered themselves to be totally pure.

In the Bethany incident, it was the disciples (specifically Judas) who did the criticizing. In the Gospel of John, we will see how John used this opportunity to snipe at Judas, calling his a "thief". In both cases, the critics were engaging in extreme "Virtue Signaling".

5. Two Different Meanings: In the first incident, the woman washed Jesus feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. This was an act of repentance and worship. This act also revealed the total disrespect that the Pharisees had given to Jesus. They had not even had one of their servants wash his feet upon arrival. That courtesy should have been done for even the most ordinary of guests. By performing this extreme act, the woman was openly demonstrating what JERKS these Pharisees were. And now, here it is, recorded for us 2000 years later.

The Mark 14 incident involves expensive, perfumed, anointing oil. The woman anoints Jesus' HEAD. It has two meanings. First, she is indicating that Jesus is a KING. To this day, kings are anointed on their heads as they take the Throne. Secondly, the anointing is a foreshadowing of Jesus' Death. Dead bodies were anointed as part of the burial ritual. The anointing was a twofold Prophecy, of Jesus' Death and Burial, and of Him being King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

From my prayer time last night:

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 94

1 O Lord, you God of vengeance,
you God of vengeance, shine forth!
2 Rise up, O judge of the earth;
give to the proud what they deserve!
3 O Lord, how long shall the wicked,
how long shall the wicked exult?

4 They pour out their arrogant words;
all the evildoers boast.
5 They crush your people, O Lord,
and afflict your heritage.
6 They kill the widow and the stranger,
they murder the orphan,
7 and they say, ‘The Lord does not see;
the God of Jacob does not perceive.’

8 Understand, O dullest of the people;
fools, when will you be wise?
9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
He who formed the eye, does he not see?
10 He who disciplines the nations,
he who teaches knowledge to humankind,
does he not chastise?
11 The Lord knows our thoughts,*
that they are but an empty breath.

12 Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord,
and whom you teach out of your law,
13 giving them respite from days of trouble,
until a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not forsake his people;
he will not abandon his heritage;
15 for justice will return to the righteous,
and all the upright in heart will follow it.

16 Who rises up for me against the wicked?
Who stands up for me against evildoers?
17 If the Lord had not been my help,
my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence.
18 When I thought, ‘My foot is slipping’,
your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.
19 When the cares of my heart are many,
your consolations cheer my soul.
20 Can wicked rulers be allied with you,
those who contrive mischief by statute?
21 They band together against the life of the righteous,
and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has become my stronghold,
and my God the rock of my refuge.
23 He will repay them for their iniquity
and wipe them out for their wickedness;
the Lord our God will wipe them out.
