Pope Francis has hinted that he would review the Roman Catholic Church’s rule of priestly celibacy, describing it as an individual “discipline” rather than a “contradiction” to the church.
“There is no contradiction for a priest to marry. Celibacy in the western Church is a temporary prescription,” Francis, 86, remarked. “It is not eternal like priestly ordination, which is forever, whether you like it or not. Whether you leave or not is another matter, but it is forever. On the other hand, celibacy is a discipline.”
Celibacy was made a requirement in the Catholic Church around the 11th century, following centuries of tradition for priests to embrace the practice along with vows of abstinence.
Most recently, Germany’s Catholic Church voted to formally send a request to the Pope to end the requirement, and it appears as though Francis might agree.
Citing the Eastern Rite Catholic Church, which gives more leeway to its priests, Francis said: “Everyone in the Eastern Church is married, or those who want to. Before ordination there is the choice to marry or to be celibate.”

Soon sodomy will be mandatory
I just dont understand how this guy was ever elected pope to begin with, didn’t anyone know his views on things beforehand?
Each other?...........
A married priest might prevent sodomy…..which is already a problem with some priests.
What about the representation of Nuns marrying Christ? Is that next. After all, goose/gander.

He was a well-known Lefty in South America. And it's widely agreed that he campaigned like crazy among liberal cardinals to get himself elected--which is strictly forbidden, and as I recall makes a Papal election invalid.
Food for thought.
There's leftist cardinals out there too. There are clear factions. Where there are humans, unfortunately, there are corruption and politics.
I think the vast majority of the cardinals in the College of Cardinals knew exactly was his views were.
The eastern catholic churches allow married priests.
might=zero relation to that problem
Rampant same sex attraction is the issue.
Not the obligation of sexual continence.
This one thing that I agree with the Poope. Although he’ll probably introduce gay marriage for priest
Yep, jettisoning priesthood celibacy will most definitely be accompanied by “gay marriage.” Bank on it.
The ban on marriage is also entirely unbiblical.
I’ve yet to see a Catholic explain these two facts:
* They claim the popes have their authority as the successors of St Peter.
* The Bible clearly mentions that Peter was married.
Sort of like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse.
True.. you have to be married before ordination though.
False. It was the expectation in the West from about the 3rd Century on.
Jewish priests did not have marital relations during the time they served the Temple. Orthodox priests -- married ones -- to this day do not have marital relations the day before they offer the Divine Liturgy.
In the West, the custom of daily Divine Liturgy (Mass) became established early on. The obvious inference can be drawn ...
However, where the Bible is silent, tradition is not. Tradition says that Peter had a wife and a daughter who went with him to Rome.
The evidence points both directions in the case of St. Paul. Paul clearly teaches in 1 Cor 7 that celibacy is superior to marriage as far as serving the Lord is concerned. Have you read it?
Almost all commentators agree that John the Evangelist was celibate.
Of course, what was common by way of concession in the early church is not necessarily the discipline that would be expected 2000 years later. See my post above.
