Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”

Dr. Ben Carson, a Brilliant Pediatric Neurosurgeon and Conservative Politician, let slip the 19th Century theory that the Great Pyramids were Grain Storehouses from the Story of Joseph, as told in the Book of Genesis. This may have been taught to him in Sunday School when he was a child, and it was a popular theory in his denomination over 100 years ago. Well, of course, the media exploded in ridicule and mocked Dr. Carson mercilessly. (Never mind that he was able to surgically separate neo-natal twins who had been joined at the brain. Let's see the "journalists" try THAT). Anyway, we know now that the Pyramids at Giza are mostly solid and would not make good grain silos. But WAIT! Several older pyramids in another region of Egypt have been found to have huge storage pits attached to them. These enormous pits have stairways going all the way down, and, for lack of a better explanation, are being called "Granaries" by the archaeologists who have uncovered them. The king who commissioned these pyramids is generally accepted as a man named "Djoser". Another shadowy figure in these stories is a Vizier named "Imhotep". Either of those names could be an Egyptian pronunciation of "Joseph", or maybe not. But Dr. Carson doesn't look so "19th Century" after all.

The Granary Theory isn't even the weirdest theory about the Great Pyramids. There are many others, of which I will share a few:

1. Giant Launching Pads for UFOs: This bizarre theory was handled beautifully in the 1994 movie "Stargate". It proposed that the entire culture of Ancient Egypt was fabricated by hostile aliens who took over the primitive people of the Nile and forced them to build the Pyramids. I loved the movie, but knew that it was all fantasy.

2. The Remnants of Atlantis: While it is entirely possible that there was a sunken civilization (there was a BIG Flood, after all), the idea that Atlantis contained both Technical and Spiritual Superiority over all the rest of humanity is a little far-fetched. Some theories posit that refugees from the sinking of Atlantis found their way to Egypt, and with their superior technology, erected the Pyramids at Giza. Why they did this is another matter entirely.

3. Energy Source: In files that were released after the fall of the USSR, the KGB claimed that they detected an energy field around the Great Pyramid at Giza. It was then that people theorized that it had been a huge energy source, like the ones explored by Nicola Tesla. Subsequent testing, though, has shown nothing of the sort. Oh Well. Back to Fossil Fuels!

4. They Were Built By Slaves: We have all seen the images of the enormous gangs of slaves being whipped as they struggled with the big stone blocks.This brings up a whole new set of theories about HOW as well as WHO built the Pyramids. Excavations have shown large villages that were the homes of the workers, and graffiti declaring PRIDE in workmanship and solidarity among the workers defies the idea that these people were slaves. There were, of course, the Hebrew Slaves in the Book of Exodus, but they built the Treasure Cities of Pithom and Rameses, not the Pyramids, which were built by skilled, proud, workmen.

So these are some of the theories about WHO. The theories about HOW are more numerous, and some are even more ridiculous. When people don't understand something, they will often believe anything just to have some kind of explanation. It is our nature, I guess.

Caesaria Philippi is located in the North of Israel, almost to the Lebanese Border. When I was there in 1984, there was a border area called "The Good Fence", where Lebanese People could visit Israel, and Israelis could visit Lebanon. Blue-Helmeted UN guys patrolled the area, and tourists were free to walk up to the fence and look into the country on the other side. I don't know if this detente even exists anymore, or if it is still possible to visit the ancient site of Peter's declaration. There is a natural spring of fresh water there, some ruins of ancient temples, and is "off the beaten track" from the rest of Israel.

There were all kinds of theories floating around about this amazing Teacher, Preacher, Healer, and Leader who had been touching lives all over the region. Because Jesus knew it was not yet time to reveal Himself to the world, He admonished the recipients of His Miracles to keep it to themselves. But of course, nobody did. And so, theories, rumors, and speculation abounded about WHO Jesus was. Some said that He was Elijah, or one of the other Prophets, or the reincarnation John The Baptist, who had recently been beheaded by Herod. Then Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say I am?”

Peter's answer (“You are the Messiah.”) was correct, but still full of misunderstanding. The Messiah who was expected by the Jews of that time was to be a Conquering King, a Liberator, and the Leader who would vanquish the Roman Empire.

Tomorrow we shall read of how this "theory" of Peter's goes down in flames when Jesus explains the real purpose of His Mission.
