Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 8
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”

16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”

17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,” they replied.

20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

They answered, “Seven.”

21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God, How Excellent is Your Holy Name!
How Glorious,
How Hallowed,
and How Wonderful!
You Alone Are Worthy Of Praise
For You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are Worthy,
And You Alone Are The One True God Of Abraham!
WE Thank You For Your Holy Word,
Even When it Doesn't Seem to fit in with our finite way of thinking,
even if it "rubs us the wrong way",
even if it "doesn't seen fair".
For Your Ways are so above our ways, who can fathom it?

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

1. It takes Two: Baby Boomers like me grew up under the shadow of a possible nuclear war. We were taught about the horrible death and destruction that would be brought about by even ONE nuclear bomb, and it haunted my nightmares for years. What I found puzzling was that, in WW2, the Japanese had to be bombed TWICE before they surrendered. For most people, one would have been enough, but my Dad explained to me that the Japanese People believed that their Emperor was a "god", and that they were so fanatical and brainwashed that it TOOK TWO. That may have been a rather simplistic explanation, but, hey...I was only ten.

2. BEWARE: There is a scary dog in my neighborhood. He is a Belgian Malinois named Neo. The owners are actually nice people, but are somewhat irresponsible, because Neo gets out of the house frequently. There is another dog in the house as well, a Dachshund, who is nastier than Neo. The two are inseparable, and sometimes prowl around the neighborhood together, looking to make trouble. The owners have had to deal with complaints, and have had to place "BEWARE OF DOG" signs in all their windows. That doesn't solve the problem if the dogs get out, but at least it will deter people from going into their home. The warning signs are to decrease liability, but, if the dogs get OUT, then the signs are worthless.

While they are in a boat and finally separated from the crowds, Jesus has a moment to teach His disciples privately. The discussion starts when the disciples start worrying and complaining that they have forgotten to bring bread for their journey. I've been on the sea of Galilee, and, although it is a fairly large lake, it's still just a lake, not an ocean. Even if they planned on being out on the water all day, there was no way anyone would starve! Jesus uses their ridiculous complaining to launch into a very deep and important lesson.

First, Jesus questions the disciples about two incredible miracles that they have just witnessed. The feeding of the 5000, and then, the subsequent feeding of the 4000, were two separate events. After preparing the disciples with these questions and answers, Jesus says:

“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”

Jesus is warning the disciples to beware of the "yeast" which is later defined as "hypocrisy". Hypocrisy is a very difficult sin to discern because it masquerades as righteousness.

As we know from previous reading, there were several sects that were the ruling class in Jesus's day. Jesus warned about three of them on more than one occasion, and the warning was against "hypocrisy". The word "Hypocrite" is from the Greek word for "Actor". In Ancient Greek Drama, the Actors wore masks, which have been immortalized in the symbols for Comedy and Tragedy in the Theater. By calling the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians "Hypocrites", Jesus was saying that they were wearing masks of "righteousness" over a sinful soul.

The hypocrisy can be categorized thus:

1. The Pharisees wore a mask to cover their Legalism.

2. The Sadducees wore a mask to cover their Unbelief.

3. The Herodians wore a mask to cover their Worldliness.

Here's how that works:

The Mask for Legalism is an appearance of Righteousness.

The Mask for Unbelief is and appearance of Liberalism, or "Social Justice".

The Mask for Worldliness is "Tolerance, and Inclusivity".

If you doubt that any of these qualify as Hypocrisy, just look at the Movie Star who wants to ration your toilet paper while flying around in a private jet.

By comparing Hypocrisy to Leaven (Yeast), Jesus is showing us how little hypocrisy it takes to spoil an entire church. Multiplying the Loaves and Fishes was a good thing, but allowing "leaven" to multiply within the body of believers is not.

BEWARE of YEAST. (all three kinds.)

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 7

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush, a Benjaminite.

1 O Lord my God, in you I take refuge;
save me from all my pursuers, and deliver me,
2 or like a lion they will tear me apart;
they will drag me away, with no one to rescue.

3 O Lord my God, if I have done this,
if there is wrong in my hands,
4 if I have repaid my ally with harm
or plundered my foe without cause,
5 then let the enemy pursue and overtake me,
trample my life to the ground,
and lay my soul in the dust.
Selah

6 Rise up, O Lord, in your anger;
lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;
awake, O my God;* you have appointed a judgement.
7 Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered around you,
and over it take your seat* on high.
8 The Lord judges the peoples;
judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness
and according to the integrity that is in me.

9 O let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
but establish the righteous,
you who test the minds and hearts,
O righteous God.
10 God is my shield,
who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge,
and a God who has indignation every day.

12 If one does not repent, God* will whet his sword;
he has bent and strung his bow;
13 he has prepared his deadly weapons,
making his arrows fiery shafts.
14 See how they conceive evil,
and are pregnant with mischief,
and bring forth lies.
15 They make a pit, digging it out,
and fall into the hole that they have made.
16 Their mischief returns upon their own heads,
and on their own heads their violence descends.

17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness,
and sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
