Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 6
Jesus Walks on the Water

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

In the Original Series Star Trek Episode called "The Naked Time", Chief Engineer Scotty declares:

"I Cannuh Change The Laws of Physics, Captain."

That single line has resonated through Popular Culture for over Fifty Years. I quoted it, just yesterday, right here in this Thread.

Tommy Dowd, a Physics teacher at Columbia, was teaching "The Laws of Physics" in the late 1940's at Columbia. He struggled with his curriculum because he had worked on the Manhattan Project and knew that the facts presented in the Physics Books were no longer valid. However, his knowledge was still Classified TOP SECRET, as it was important to keep the Soviets from developing The Bomb. Tommy left the Teaching Profession and became a Recording Engineer. He invented important Recording Devices, such as the Mixer/Fader, and revolutionized Multi-Track Audio Recording. He was also a Pioneer in eliminating Racial Discrimination in the recording Industry. He was a Engineer/Producer and great friend to such diverse artists as Dwayne Allman, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and the band Lynyrd Skynnard. Tommy Dowd learned that the "Laws" or at least our perception of them, do indeed change, from Aristotle, Ptolemy, Newton, Einstein, to Hawking, and beyond. I for one, am glad he left Columbia and gifted the World with such epic Rock Masterpieces of Engineering like the song Layla

The "Laws of Physics" are something we can all relate to. Even a Nihilist (who claims to believe in nothing) wouldn't dare step out of an airplane without a parachute. An atheist who claims no belief in a "Higher Power" would still hesitate to step out of a boat if he knew he couldn't swim. Those who claim no Faith still believe in The Laws of Physics, and it is a very strong faith indeed. Like Chief Engineer Scotty, they believe that The Laws of Physics are immutable, and, therefore, the ONE thing they can hang onto.

However, these Laws are not as "immutable" as first thought. Up until the early Twentieth Century, it was believed that The Atom was the smallest, indivisible unit of matter. Since then, we have divided the Atom and discovered even smaller particles. Even the name of the discipline of studying the Atom has changed. It is now called "Quantum Physics." Now before any real Physicists tell me I'm full of baloney, I shall remind you all:

"I'm A MUSICIAN, NOT a A Scientist!"

The disciples of Jesus were not Scientists, but they certainly understood The Laws of Physics when it came to WATER. When they saw Jesus walking on the surface of the lake, in the storm, they did not discuss Fluid Dynamics, Surface Tension, or other possible scientific explanation for this phenomenon. In fact, they went to the complete opposite and thought that Jesus was a Ghost or Spirit of some kind. Their superstitious assumption filled them with fear.

The first thing Jesus says to them is:

“Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.”

Then He gets into the boat with them and they continue on their way.

There are times when our first reaction will be FEAR. When faced with a severe illness, a dangerous situation, or a phenomenon that can't be explained scientifically, it is totally natural to feel that way. We either try to explain the phenomenon, either scientifically or supernaturally, which may increase our fear, because there is nothing more frightening than The Unknown.

But Jesus reaches out, makes the "Unknown" Known and gives us courage, comfort, and strength.

His words "It Is I" resemble the very Name of God, "I AM".
