Matthew 28
The Guards’ Report

11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

In 1972, there was a burglary of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate Complex in Washington DC. This led to a major scandal, and the eventual resignation of President Nixon. It even coined a new word in our lexicon. From that point forward, most major scandals involving politicians have the suffix "-gate" attached to them. Everything from Iran-ContraGATE to MonicaGATE, to PizzaGATE, and beyond, as if Watergate was the first time in History a World Leader has been caught in a lie. Now we are seeing "GarageGATE" unfold before our very eyes. "GATE" is an Equal-Oppurtunity Suffix, and no respecter of Party Affiliations. With the incredible flow of information in our Digital Age, it becomes more and more difficult to hide ANYTHING.

However, most people these days, when asked about Watergate, will reminisce that the COVERUP was worse than the actual CRIME.

Matthew is the only Evangelist that tells of the "TombGATE Conspiracy". Here we see the Religious Officials (Politicians!) paying off the Roman Guards who were the First Witnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus. The Cosmic Forces involved were so powerful that these tough men were knocked off their feet, and struck unconscious. The KNEW that something far greater had happened then a mere theft of a body. But they were being offered a large sum of money to keep their mouths shut. Deployed far from home, in a hostile environment, that looked like a good deal to them. It also would keep them out of trouble, if somehow they could spread the story that they had been ambushed by some bloodthirsty body-snatchers in the middle of the night. And so, the Cover-up began.

Why is this only reported by Matthew? The clue is in the last sentence. As we discovered earlier, Matthew's Gospel was aimed at his own Jewish People. By blowing the lid off of TombGATE, Matthew was reporting the Truth, and explaining to his beloved People WHY they had been given a false report. He is being an Investigative Reporter, a Whistle-blower, and an Excellent Detective. Sadly, Matthew remarks that, in spite of his revelation, there "are many Jews who believe the [TombGATE] story to this day."

Tomorrow we will conclude Matthew with The Great Commission. Then we will explore another Narrative, that of Mark, who tells the same story with a whole different perspective.
